Had mine replaced under warranty at 14K miles - They were as popular as the Tellurides with the same dark chrome mouldings. Apparently they are popular to discolor and fade. They stated it was due to the shipping protection ate into the finish. Maybe so? Who knows, the body shop popped the old one's off and new one's on fairly quick and I had the car back the same day.
waaat bs. the shipping protection isn't a coating it is black tape on the chrome pieces. quite a few of us were driving around for a while before noticing that one or more of the dark chrome strips were black because the tape had not been removed during prep.

I think the dealerships are referring to the white plastic wrapping the cars are covered in when shipped from Korea. My dark chrome was faded and had spots that looked like hard water spots on the finish. They replaced all of them and now it looks perfect.
the white plastic protective wrap is on the paint not the chrome trim. the 'water spotting' discoloration of the dark chrome trim is a complex of chemical contamination, could be from the air-moisture and-or what is used to clean the car, some car washes have very strong chemicals, and heavy exposure to the sun will only make it worse. and of course actual hard water can be a bitch but that would also spot the paint-clear coat and glass.
Since it happened to a lot of the Dark Chrome Stingers and a ton of the Dark Chrome Tellurides it sounds like something that either they were exposed to on the way over from Korea or the covering. The replacement strips aren't discoloring and fading like the originals. If it was one-off's, I'd agree with your view of car wash soaps and chemicals.
it's close to one-offs, or one here and one there. most stingers don't do this, or not very noticeably, otherwise we'd be flooded by the issue being called out. yes it gets mentioned fairly frequently. my dark chrome was perfect until not long past my 36 months warranty, then I noticed the first spotting and got on it right away. the black protection tape on the dark chrome does not discolor the finish, and being covered 'on the way over' obviously nothing is contaminating the dark chrome in transit. I have looked over quite a few stingers sitting in dealerships and have yet to see one with this issue. It happens later because of particular factors as I already offered examples of.
I want to agree with you, but there's enough evidence the manufacturer of the trim is most likely the culprit. Either the coating on the trim that seals it has an issue, or the coating is just bad.
Keep in mind, this issue also occurs on the Genesis G70's and G80's. It's not just particularly one model or trim. It's spread out over all the models that receive this trim color.
The Trim on my 2020 still looks fairly new. Back then I had polished and then ceramic coated it along with the rest of the car. A few maintenance sprays of a ceramic topper every few weeks and all is still good. But it is a poorly finished part and should be able to stand up to the elements a lot better than what people are experiencing.

The trim on my 2020 was in really bad shape and my car just hit 16,800 miles today. "Lucky"/unlucky for me my car got hailed on last year and all the trim was replaced. We'll see how the replacements hold up.
Out of curiosity, did any Stinger NOT come with the black chrome? Maybe the gts, sunset yellow, scorpion, grand tourer models? I thought some had carbon fiber trim instead of the black chrome?

My KIA dealership polished one of the black chrome strips with Chemical Guys metal cleaner. They told me the Tellurides had so many factory warranty replacements that KIA had decided to try cleaning before replacing the trim pieces. This was done last month and I will be monitoring the situation. Good thing is they are covered under the 5/60 warranty.

don't forget the first two years of 2.0l trims, the base and premium, they have bright strips that match the door handles garnish, the fake hood vents garnish, the top grille and the exhaust tips. no spotting.
don't think so, these pieces are considered under the paint warranty which is for 36 months or 36,000 miles.
