I thought I would start a new thread to get people to discuss what their previous performance rides were. For some people, the Stinger may be their first performance car, but for old farts like me there might be a rich interesting history of past vehicles that have led you up to this point.
I will start with my own history.
The first car I would call "performance" started out as a 1967 Ford Galaxy 500. It was just a car during my senior year of high school to get me around. After I graduated, I started doing some work on it. I eventually wound up with a rebuilt 390 V8 (FE block) with a Holley carb. I rebuilt the tranny (C6) myself with upgraded clutches and steels and put in a B&M high stall TC. The rear was a 9" Detroit locker with 4.11 gears. Used to hang around the street racing circuit in San Fernando Valley (SoCal) on Saturday nights.
I got more mellow for several years (family more important you know), and my next performance car was a 1998 Ford SVT Mustang Cobra (4.6l all aluminum 32v DOHC V8). I kept that stock for some time until the engine lost a piston. I had the engine rebuilt with all forged internals and stroker crank. Because this probably resulted in a 350lb-ft torque exceeding the stock T45 tranny (rated 330) and those T45's were crap anyway, I fit in a Tremec TKO tranny. Upgraded the clutch system from 10.5" to 11", aluminum flywheel, aluminum driveshaft. This car was a kick to drive, when the IMRC opened up, it feels like a turbo kicking in.
I eventually gave that car to my son, but for the last few years missed having a performance car. I got an Optima 2 years ago, mainly for commuting, but now with Covid and working from home, that isn't a concern. Always liked the Stinger and now I have one.
