Hello everyone. My younger brother has a Buick Regal GS and he's in a local Buick club. He told me this morning that the next generation Regal, which will be here some time later this year, will have a hatchback variant that might compete with the Kia Stinger. I know this isn't a good image but here's what it'll look like. There will also be a "GS" version that he says "probably won't be very fast" but may be competitive enough, unexpectedly for Buick, with our car.

If it's FWD, as most all Buicks are AFAIK, I think you can rule it out as competition from a sportiness aspect. But that's just one persons opinion.

interesting. i did a little reading and it appears it'll be available in fwd and awd. it looks like a nice car. i'd like to see more pictures like the front and interior. i doubt it'll be very exciting since it's coming from buick. long gone are the days of the grand national and gnx.

Everybody is doing this long body hatch back thing now, huh? Hatch backs used to be like my old Ford Focus. Now they're getting long almost like wagons. So I guess every brand is going to have something like the Stinger soon. I guess they're trying everything considering how regular sedans just aren't selling anymore.

Oh, I almost forgot. This Buick looks pretty nice. But I don't see myself driving a Buick any time soon. Maybe if I color my hair blue like the girl in that ad. Remember? :p

A couple of interesting comments above. In particular, "i doubt it'll be very exciting since it's coming from Buick" and " I don't see myself driving a Buick any time soon".

They seem to be similar to, "fifty thousand dollars for a KIA? No way". That old preconception thing again. We all have them.

I'm not judging the Buick-ness of the car, I'm judging the front wheel drive-ness of it. I've seen some sexy Buicks, even if they are just concept cars.

The're going to call this opel the holden commodore in Australia.

Buick has some of the best concepts but GM is too stupid to ever make them a reality. The reason the current LaCrosse is failing miserably is because everyone was expecting more Avenir than it got. Big mistake. They had a great opportunity to have a halo flagship and they dropped the ball. Big time.

The Buick Regal GS from back in the 90s was a nice sleeper but that's the last Buick that I had any interest in. The current GS is nice but weak. I don't know why it's even got the GS badge.

I don't know which Buick is supposed to appeal to young women these days. Maybe the Cascara? I don't know. My guess is probably the Encore. And how exciting is that?

Some of the rumors swirling for the 2018 GS model listed below. Kudos for the AWD system......and that is all I got.
  • 300 pounds (136 kg) lighter than last-generation Regal
  • 300/300 version of the 2.0T (272/295 in current ATS; 275/295 in current Camaro)
  • 8-Speed Auto
  • GKN Twinster Torque Vectoring AWD System (e.g. Ford Focus RS & Lincoln MKZ w/Driver's Package)
  • Four-wheel independent suspension
  • Unique High Performance Strut (HiPer Strut) front suspension design that reduces torque steer, provides more linear and communicative steering through improved camber control, improves impact isolation on bumps and rough surfaces
  • Adaptive Suspension with FlexRide Dampers
  • Interactive Drive Control System (i.e. drive modes)
  • Four-wheel-disc brake system with front Brembo brakes (caliper and rotors)

The new Regal sport wagon looks promising if they actually bring it to the US.

I do believe the Regal sport wagon is coming. Watch The Buick Owners Group for the latest if you're interested. And the new GS is probably going to be a nice improvement over the current generation. But I still think it needs a turbo V6 to be competitive. I don't see why Buick is okay with being out-shined by the Ford Fusion...

I agree completely.

A version of the 404/400 LGW 3.0TT V6 in the CT6 would work nicely. It was engineered for both transverse and longitudinal applications. Plus it shares lots of features with the LGX 3.6 V6 and GM has stated they already test fit the LGX.

i would immediately add a buick regal gs wagon to my short list if it had a 3.0 tt v6 available. i would definitely want to test drive it and compared it to a stinger gt.

I drive a new Camaro RS with the 335hp 3.6 V6. I'd prefer that engine in the new Regal over the TT v6 as it's simpler, efficient, effective and affordable.

Simplicity is certainly nice but I'm thinking the Regal GS, as more of a luxury car with features and sound deadening material weighing it down, plus girth, it's going to be too heavy for that 3.6 liter V6 to be called "GS". It's going to need more horsepower, more torque and a broader torque curve. Otherwise it's just a Regal.

No thanks. An HO version of the 2.0 with 300+ hp makes more sense for the GS in this scenario.

300lbs is pretty significant. Even if power were to stay the same that would make for a pretty decent difference for most people. And that's what Buick is trying to do. Impress most buyers. So it will probably do well even without a significant power bump. But then what will Buick do about losing sales to cars like the Stinger? That's where the problem is. If Buick wants to sell a car to people who want something a little exciting they're going to need to keep up with the competition. I'm sure they never thought Kia would be competition but you have to be blind, at this point, to not see it.
