Tuning Advice

Why would you need an oil catch can?

You can read all about it HERE. It prevents oil from ending up in your intake/valves/intercooler via the PCV. In direct injected motors, the detergents in the gasoline never touch the valves. You will end up having to get walnut blasting periodically to clean the carbon deposits off.

@terrelltechsup - would the dealer frown if I was to get an oil catch can? Regardless, I should just talk to Burger & have them advise me.
@Adamdan & @washguy - I drive my car hard always (unless the baby is in the car), I also avg. about 18-20k miles a year & it's my only car so the "reliability" & tune are of upmost importance. Every car I've had (at least the past 8 years) was tuned, I had an 2007 Saab 93 area (dyno'd at 322hp & 436ftlb), yes - i blew it up... Then 2014 BMW 335xi w/intake, exhaust & M performance chip & '15 BMW X1 x35i w/intake & Dinan stage 2. That I bought this new last month (now have almost 3k miles), I just installed the K&N's today and preparing for the tune by May. As my history shows, performance & the least amount of work is what i'm after; So do you guys (and anyone else that can chime in) have an oil catch can? From the forums, the plugs are an obvious choice along with the tune. I feel the car is starving for something. I didnt drive the car with the K&N's in yet but it feels like it needs more air, or it can't exhaust fast enough. IDK? Have all of you put an intake? And for those who have an exhaust and/or downpipe and exhaust - is it a drastic add on?

I had 4 optimas. All of them had a catch can installed and the dealership never commented once. BMW actually recommends walnut blasting every 30k miles because of the carbon build up due to pcv blow by. Feel free to check with others. I believe you will get the same answers.

Hands if you put this many miles on your ride and its a dd....do not put any exhaust carbacks on it...you will most likely have the dreaded drone....the Stinger does not like catbacks and there isn't much to gain HP wise..BUT the down pipes (midpipes) from SSR will give you performance without the noise...im going to get the down pipes(midpipes),but leave the rest of the exhaust system stock ....:) Wash

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
Not really advice but I'll give you the order of my mods.
1. ADDw1 Oil Catch can (PCV) side only. Did that with about 600 miles on car. There has been a decent amount of oil caught in the catch can so I would say it's a must. Two dealer visits, no mention of it.
After catch can I waited a while for other mods as I was getting a feeling for the car stock and reading everything I could on the forum.
2. Eibach pro-kit (springs and sway bars). Delivery of springs came first so I put them on. Sway bars were delivered last weekend and installed Monday latest mod. Night and day difference to me.
3. Went with Stillen intake. I believe they all are mostly the same and haven't seen evidence to the contrary. SSR has the only truly CAI but I couldn't justify the price or it being exposed to the elements.
4. After alot of reading on the options, I went with the JB4 for tuning with the bluetooth connect kit, fuel wires and Denso plugs gapped down to .024. Easy install and setup. Terry from Burger is responsive and helpful. Haven't looked back since. No issues, and feel the car now performs the way it should have come.
5. Waiting on SSR down (mid) pipes to be delivered and will pair with stock exhaust like Wash is doing.

I loved the car stock and and fell in love more with each of the mods. The SSR pipes will probably be the last thing I do. Hope it gets me around or above 400whp and that's enough for my DD (9500 miles since mid November).

Working on a clean BMS OCC solution. Will be a little different than other solutions out there. Might be worth the wait. :)

EXTRA interested in this. Will buy IMMEDIATELY.

Terry@BMS - Let us know when you have the OCC available. I will order everything at once. Thanks everyone for your input.

Just wanted to share what the dealer said. I just dropped my car off for its first service & asked the dealer about the oil catch can. They strongly advised against it & they stated if you do any aftermarket accessories (tune, intake, etc.) remove it before you bring it to the dealer & your in good shape. Something like the oil catch can, I dont believe it's easily removable. So I guess this question is for Berger @Terry@BMS - if they require the catch can to do the JB4 tune. In short, Let's say I do the JB4 with the new spark plugs and gapped them at 024 and run the JB4 at Map2 at all times, what issues (if any) should I be concerned about?

I would look for a different dealership that is more lenient. The oil catch can is basically a must have for direct injected motors and should have been there from manufacturer... There is no way I would run without one unless you feel like paying said dealership for walnut blasting at 30k miles.

OCC is not required, most don't run them. We're working on a clean BMS OCC solution right now. :)

I would use one... I have gotten about a quarter cup of oil out of the PCV side in about 5k miles. Has anyone looked at the internals of the PCV to see what is going on in there? The Focus RS guys add a plate to increase the surface area of the baffles to filter out more blowby and add the ability to use an OCC. An OCC may not be required for a tune but coming from the Optima, you most certainly want one.

We're working on some OCC options that are a little different than what is out now, yes.

Go to another dealer. This is literally the first time I've heard someone bitch about a catch can when a car was brought in. Most dealers will tolerate catch cans, intakes and catbacks with no issue, some are even more lenient, on occasion(Not any KDM dealers I've seen around where I am) they may even welcome modding especially if you pay them to install it. I don't think anyone is requiring a catch can but I wouldn't want to drive a GDi car without one, or any turbo car for that matter. You won't run into issues now but carbon buildup on valves may start affecting things down the line.

Informative information on OCC. @TorkMe @Sales@Tork @NICK_KHAR question for you guys that sell OCC. I personally have the Tork OCC because of its oem like finish/look on the car. My question for Tork or anyone that has knowledge on OCC. Is the Tork occ a “clean solution” ? Is it clean? What is the difference from a normal occ to a clean occ solution? I thought all occ serve the same purpose? Is clean like a new technology?

It is a sealed can with 2 ports. Cheap knockoffs are just that an empty can. Most differences are related to how the can filters, what kind of filter media is inside the can and what kind of extra features it has like sight tubes, drain valves, etc.

I understand that, but all the OCC in the market for the Stinger are high quality. I have the Tork OCC and I assume it’s not just an empty can, @TorkMe @Sales@Tork can confirm. The 6th element as well is high quality stuff and then there is the W3 I beleive. I don’t think any of those are just empty cans.

Can't imagine why anyone would get any tuning solution other than the JB4. If you don't want the extra power/safety from JB4's OBDII and fuel wires then just don't install those. :)

Not everyone has the option to purchase a jb4..
