Have been to dealer several times, changed to new set of Michelin tires, consulted with transmission specialist, was told common problem with this transmission type. Anyone else experience this annoying noise?
Well, in the motorcycle realm, the transmission clutch pack is sometimes referred to as a transmission pancake.
It's a bunch of alternating friction and steel plates on a clutch basket. At the other end is a pressure plate with springs pressing the whole mess together. The pancake is bathed in butter... err.. engine oil creating a wet clutch assembly.
The other thought was a torque converter which sort of looks like a pancake.
Thinking of sti's (not the subaru kind), the blue waffle comes to mind.
So... Define more clearly which waffle you're referring to. Personally, I like the kind you make yourself at places like marriott.
Waffle? At a speed range? "Don't waffle", means dithering or being inconsistent, much like double-talk. Is your tranny dithering between 35 and 50 MPH?
