Transmission Control Unit (TCU) Update

No, I don't have the updated TCU discussed here. It shows in the dealer's network as for cars with mechanical shifter only (not drive-by-wire). My car is also older (late 2017 build). !! So confusing as to what works how.

For those whose car reverts to D at a stop even in Sport Mode, try clicking off TV beforehand and see if that makes a difference. It should affect some aspects of the transmission programming/operation.
TV? Don't understand. Did you mean TC (Traction Control)?

Tried that. Turned off TC then turned off stability control. No difference either way. Still reverts back to "D" at every full stop. Frustrating to say the least!

So the MY19s still do this, according to a video review posted here. But is this some kind of deal breaker? It is on the level of a quirk. Comparing the Singer point by point with other cars that DO things a certain way isn't really germane to enjoying driving a Stinger. For over 4K miles I didn't even know about manual gate in my GT1. Heh! :D Then I was reading in the manual (it was my bedside read for the first three months:)), and came across "manual gate", and I said out loud, "No way! Are you kidding me?" I didn't wait till morning, but went outside and checked it out and "discovered" it. Lol. Up till then, I simply clicked the paddle shifter when I came to a complete stop and the "D" showed. Not a big deal. But, I was super pleased to finally not have to do that anymore. If I had to now, I'd revert back to my first expedient and not worry about it.

Some people know and knew about manual mode as an essential element of any sporty car before they purchased. If you didn't, this probably isn't an important topic for you.

Unfortunately many manufacturers manage to screw up manual mode in multiple different ways. The frustration here seems to be differences that make no sense and difficulty figuring out who has what and what impact updates have. Once again, complete lack of proper documentation from KIA wastes everyone's time struggling to figure these things out.

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...

Are you saying your stinger does not revert back to D after coming to a complete stop?

Yes. It stays in "1". Manual gate is handy that way. It's a GT1 thing, apparently. Or possibly, is it every trim but GT2?

If you downshift when you come to that complete stop, the trans goes into 1st.

And stays, is that right? That's what I was saying that I would do before I "discovered" manual gate. Come to a complete stop, trans moves to "D", click the left (downshift) paddle, and "1" appears. Manual gate is cool because you stay in manual no matter what (well, red lining the tach overrides even manual gate and the trans shifts up for you; I found that out too.)

As discussed about a dozen times (probably in this thread alone), the GT2 does the same--stays in "1." That's partly why we're all trying to figure out which does what.

Well, that reviewer didn't figure out how to get the MY19 GT2 to stop shifting back into "D". He specifically mentioned that as a surprise and minor disappointment.

Actually, I've been scanning a bunch of the transmission shifting threads dealing with this subject and it seems to me that most people can't keep their shift-by-wire cars (GT2 in the US, GT Limited in Canada) from shifting back to D when they come to a full stop. Marc's experience seems to be the exception rather than the rule.

My GT Limited has done this since new (shifted back to D on coming to a stop). There aren't any control settings that will change that (I've tried them all), and according to the dealer there are currently no TCU updates available for the shift-by-wire transmission.

I’ve got the yellow base gt awd and it always stays in manual if I have the shifter over in manual mode... And to add I also got the TCu update and it seems slightly more sluggish to me all around ...

You would be one of a growing number of people who are saying this. The "update" (for whatever reason) pigs out the Sport mode capabilities. Bummer! It seems that shift by wire shifting back to "D" mode is a separate quirk, not the original reason why people are opting for the "update". Why did you go in for the "update"? Am I missing something?

I got my car repainted and figured why not since it was there ... figured a tsb on tranny was needed.. I feel it did help with some jerkyness on cruise and what not but def did something to sport... not like I can’t use manual mode though.. at least that works and holds gears

So no one has herd of any fix yet to get tranny back to how snappy it was before update. My car would blast through gears before. Second would hit hard. Now it seems every gear on even side is really light during shifts in sports. But all the odd gears are shifting quick and snappy. Most trannys work where one clutch bank runs even side and the other clutch pack runs reverse and odd shifts . They screwed something up. But probably don’t care to fix or no how. If anyone’s herd if anything about making tranny better hit me up please
