Sunset Yellow Discussion

Interesting development, at least in my opinion... The form they sent for me to receive the $5K has the following language inside:

The undersigned Customer acknowledges that Kia Motors America, Inc. (“Kia”) has arranged for the Vehicle to be repainted to address a factory paint adherence issue that resulted in some paint chipping on certain affected areas of Sunset Yellow Stinger vehicles including the exterior metal panels such as the hood, doors, windshield pillars, and tail gate/deck lid as part of Kia’s Voluntary Service Campaign SC166 (“SC166”) previously noticed to Customer.

For those that have had their Stinger repainted, I haven't seen anyone with their tailgate and deck lid repainted. However, this language implies that they are supposed to paint the deck lid and tailgate. As such I was not able to sign the document in its current state without further reimbursement for the additional paint work that I am paying for out of pocket to complete the job. I am paying to have the rockers, front and rear bumper, tailgate and tailgate / deck lid to be repainted myself. That job was initially quoted at $1500, and then the price changed to $2500, but due to their previous quote of $1500 I was able to talk them down to around $2000 given that I was procuring and installing the badges myself. I was going to replace the badges anyways, so it worked out as I will be receiving the car completely debadged.

Anyways, I am curious, who else is getting their deck lid / tailgate repainted during their SC166 service?

I am having my decklid/tailgate repainted as I had several huge chunks of paint missing under the license plate. They were flaked off down to the metal, and it was approved by Kia during the initial exam. Also, I developed the headlight rub on the front bumper and when I dropped the car off, the body shop submitted this to Kia who also 'approved' the front bumper to be repainted. The only parts that won't be repainted are the rocker panels and rear bumper. With that being said, once the car is done and Kia inspects it, if they don't match I will definitely show my ass and make them do it. I am not spending a penny out of pocket except to replace the passenger side mirror cover where a rock took a chunk out of the plastic, but that's on me.

I completely feel for you and was going to drop an extra $4k to have all the jams done, under hood/engine, etc all completed but then I decided to wait. I want to see how some of these finished products turn out and go from there. Also, I am in contact with the body shop doing the car at least every couple of days. They took it upon themselves to just remove the bumpers and have Kia send a paint engineer to go over the car completely before they did anything else, and give them a detailed breakdown of everything to be done to the car, what steps and processes, down to the Nth degree. That was just completed last week, but it makes me feel better knowing the lengths to which they are going to ensure this is done correctl;y the first time with no problems. The only additional piece that has to be done, is that my hood has to be chemical stripped before it is redone. The reasoning behind that, I don't know, I just know that I am not worried about this shop doing the job the correct way. If it takes 2-3 extra weeks to get a great result, I'm good with that.

Along with you @StungnTn I am getting mine back completely debadged as well, and if I keep it, will only be putting the black/dark chrome Flying K emblems on the hood and tailgate. I will be leaving every other badge off of the car as I like the completely clean look, but definitely want the cool looking Kia badge on there. I think their US badges are just dam ugly and need to be updated, lol, but thats nowhere near the scope of this thread.

Car is back, haven't had good enough light to thoroughly inspect it. Here are some quick shots, color matching is much better than before, not perfect, but pretty close. Paint comes with lifetime warranty from the shop, any additional issues with the paint will be delt with them.

@StungnTn, I think it looks very good. See the pic of mines brand new and I am sure you will notice that the paint seems different between the bumper and fender 20180727_144258.webp

Thanks @Jean

Other thoughts, I was told that another yellow stinger opted to have the front windshield removed during the paint process. I would have done it if only I had known...

Anyways, now for 60 days of waiting and crossing my fingers until I can get PPF.

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
NP @StungnTn, my windshield did come off, although I honestly did not think it was necessary, but you never know.

I'm in the same boat 60+ days, I did go to the shop today and the car looks amazing. I will be at the dealership with he Kia inspector on Wednesday to hopefully pick it up...the dealership will lower my car for free because of my trouble tho.

I am by no means a Kia advocate, but I just wanted to show that even from factory there is a difference in color shades (see other angle even in showroom20180727_184749.webp 20180727_123141.webp ). Sometimes we get too caught up with stuff that was already there and did not notice...my .02

Did they forget to put your front emblem on or did you ask them not to?

It was cheaper to buy a new one and install it myself. I was planning on changing out the badges myself anyways.

Finally got my beast back after 5 weeks. So far I have no complaints. It was signed off by the Kia regional manager out of Omaha Nebraska (I'm in Des Moines IA.) I'm still going over it before signing the paperwork to get the 5K. At least your paint matches. Looks awesome.
I wasnt so lucky. The body shop was actually embarrassed that Kia approved this job. Odd shop said the original paint was terrible. Front actually matches, back and lower panels dont which says a lot about the paint quality. The parts they repainted are amazing.
Emailed Kia and asked them politely if they wouldn’t mind painting the car a uniform color. They said no and said if we weren’t happy they would send the buyback paperwork. Apparently two tone cars are in style. 100kish in Kia Stinger product in my driveway and this is their response. I wonder if they will buyback both Stingers so we can start over.
Extremely frustrating, and shouldn’t be.
This isnt rocket science.

@Dmchristie1 The pictures I posted originally looked a lot like yours, the ones I just posted were after I payed to get the rest of the car painted. I'm hoping to get reimbursed, I've heard that others are getting a full repaint paid for by KIA. I went ahead and did it because the paint shop said to be able to have the best match possible I should have the rest of it painted in 2-3 weeks.

Howdy @StungnTn ! I would love to see proof of someone actually getting a full repaint of all parts of a Sunset Yellow. I wouldn't take anyone's word for it because I went as far up with Kia as I could go and was told 'No the parts will match after a repaint and we will not paint rockers, rear bumper, door jams, roof trim, handles, etc'. When it is done, and they don't match, I am going to show my ass even more (luckily with the backing of the paint shop and dealership) and have those parts replaced and repainted.

@Dmchristie1 That's pretty shitty that the Kia rep approved it, even though the rear and rockers don't match. It's yet another flaw in the Kia plan of god knows how many hands in this process with an ability to make a decision that sticks us with shit, even though the other offers are on the table. It doesn't absolve them of the shitty process they set up and there being varying levels of quality that the customer is stuck with, and no recourse to correct properly. There should be no 'leeway' so to speak about any of this. It's either right or wrong, and the subjective BS of some field rep is way to big of a variable to place the final OK on. I REALLY hope you can get this sorted and fixed properly.

Hoping she comes home today. Awaiting Kia's OK to take possession. I have inspected it and am completely satisfied (with some back and forth and 60+ days later of course) Mod time! Dealership save me some time as they lowered it for me free of cost (for my troubles)IMG_22831.webp

Did you ask them to leave off the limited emblems or did they forget to put them back on?

Yes I did. They shop did put the new front and back; black chrome flying K and Stinger script respectively. Photos to come sometime later today!

@Jean Did they have any issues with your fuel door? The fuel door fitment looks a little different between the before and after pictures. I know they struggled with my fuel door and there were paint issues on the bottom corner of the door. Might want to check it out, it could just be the picture though.

@StungnTn, I did not notice any, but will double check later today. It might be angle of the pic...who knows...will let u know later

@StungnTn - car looks great after the second round of paint!

I have moved forward with buyback for a number of reasons and have been transferred to the Kia HQ team in Irvine. I submitted all initially requested docs and am now being requested to submit more. I did the lease then buyout and somehow that is causing issues?? They want info from KMF as well as from my Credit Union now to try and determine what was paid where. Seems like they are making this more difficult than it needs to be at the moment as they even asked me to update the car registration to show the credit unions name. Not even sure my state will do that??

Anyway, the lady i am working with has been very nice so i will try to accommodate all the extra paper work that i can.

For reference, i have chosen to skip the repaint so will keep the thread updated as my buyback progresses should anyone find need for that after a re paint as well.

No details on "how" they intended to payoff the loan with the Credit Union and to me for the payments already made along with accessories. I advised them that the car (asset) would not be surrendered without certified funds or cash in hand.

I'm at 36 days since submitting all paperwork. Mine was a straight purchase, no lease buyout, so it's taking a while even with a straight forward sale and no extra paperwork needed.
