For those with gt shifters, how do you put it in park? I know there is a park button, but the do you leave it in drive or reverse? The sales guy pointed this out to me when I test drove it and I had it in reverse when I pushed the park button.

The GT2 has a solenoid shifter. It will not go into Park with the button unless the car is stopped. The manual says to apply the electric parking brake first, then Park. Just press the button with the car stopped. Doesn't matter R or D as long as the car is not moving.

On a related note. The night I bought my car I test drove a GT1 with the regular shifter. As they were doing their song and dance I decided I wanted the GT2 floor model. I didn't even notice the drive by wire didn't have the park in the shifter. They pull the car out of the showroom and park it in front. As I'm driving home I decide to stop by a 7-11 to get a soda. So...I pull up, push the shifter to the "park" position and well, it goes to reverse. I then pull it down towards me it then goes to drive. I'm thinking...what in the hell! I begin to get annoyed. As I'm sitting in front of 7-11 with my foot firmly on the brake...I see the "P" button. I think, that's not a button...is it?! It is/was. I'm slow and sometimes I get out of the house...but not often.

It does not matter in which ever gear you are in. As long as you are stop you can just press P button. Or just shut off the car it will go to P itself. You can just select D or R the brakes will auto release when you are to move off as long as your foot is on the brakes.

Thanks for the info. When I was test driving it, I put it in reverse and kept pushing it up as if there was a park but it kept bouncing back and the sales guy was smiling at me then reminded me to press the button. This shifter on the gt2 is pretty cool if I must say, but I need to be careful or I may end up hitting something.

It takes a bit to get used to these things which is why some places make sure during the pick up process after the sales, your sales person goes through this important step with you. Had it on my 535 M Sport and took a while to get used to but as said, if you turn off the car, it goes into park. As someone that religiously use the parking brake, I can tell you it save me a few times in the beginning as I forgot to press the button. Be safe and let anyone behind the wheel of your car know this before you let them drive it.

Every time I read about the "solenoid" shifter in the GT2, I am glad for my (now almost retro) shifter in my GT1. I like moving the thing where I want it. There's enough electronic "wizardry" going on already with this car, all of it out of my control. Being able to do the shifting is a familiarity I'm glad I didn't have to give up.

KIA made a automatic shifter for everybody lol.... some likes it cool some likes it mechanical!

Do you have to use the parking brake or not? You shouldn’t need it at all in an automatic.

Always engage the electronic parking brake when turning off the car. That is "book" from Kia.

If you use the auto hold, it automatically applies the parking brake when you put it in park.

Where did you learn that? That's a new thing (good) about the Stinger.

It is in the manual. Plus I use it all the time, just wish you could set the default for auto hold to on instead of off.

If Kia requires the parking brake to be set every time you shift to park, why don't they build that into the shift to park?

Yep! He was sitting in the passenger seat going through all this stuff and not once did he mention the push button parking dealio. Maybe he figured only a moron wouldn't know how to get the drive by wire into park. :alien:

For any car, the parking brake helps hold the car and take the pressure/weight of the vehicle off the transmission. Drive me crazy when people put their cars in park, let off the brake, the car rolls a bit until the transmission holds the car AND THEN they set the parking brake. NO! Shift to park, set the parking brake, then let your foot off the brake.

I’m with you on that Chris. They do that and wonder the next time why it’s hard to shift out of park. I get that folks do things out of habit but don’t blame the manufacturer when they state in the manual the proper procedures, when you don’t follow it. They made the manual for a reason, folks just dom’t Like reading these days. Whenever I get a new car, I spend some time learning about the features and how to use them.
