I was hungry this morning and wanted to find a place to have breakfast, I spotted a place where I could just pull into the side and park. My eyes were still looking for a cafe that I knew was around the area, I was still moving forward very slowly as I was parking and..................

............SCRAAAPPPPEEEE!!!!!!

My heart sank, realisation sinked in to what have just happened.

I curbed by damn rim!!! And by the sounds of it and the vibrations that I felt through the steering wheel, HARD!!

I got out of my car feeling so stupid as I have told myself that I will park this thing a metre away from the curb if I have to so I don't scratch these awesome rims. I started rubbing curb rash like an open wound, hoping that my fingers will have magical powers and heal the scratches. I even got alcohol wipes to rub the rashes so they are clean and I can assess the damage I have caused.

I lost my appetite and just decided to get some bread to takeaway and drove home feeling bummed as hell. I stopped by a park on the way and went for a walk to reflect on the stupidity that just happened, assessing what I was doing at the time but realising no amount of flashing back will undo the damage I have done to my rim.

On the way back to my car, I went pass several late model vehicles and admired them as I walked pass. Then I started noticing something....

Walked pass a new BMW 330i, looked at the rims.... curb rash. A relatively new Tesla... curb rash on entire rim. A new Audi S3, curb rash. A new Porsche, curb rash on both rims!

One after the other, almost all the cars parked have curb rashes on the rims. Out of about 50 cars I walked passed, only 1 have no curb rash and it was an earlier model VW Golf. I saluted the car as I walked pass to congratulate the owner for not scratching any of the rims.

I walked back to my car with mixed emotions, feeling less stupid but felt sad for the owners of the cars that I saw as the feeling is still fresh for me when curbed my rim. I thought to myself... are curb rashes unavoidable to daily drivers? I took another look at my damaged rim and realised it's actually not that bad or noticable from a distance. I decided to accept what has happened and drove home.

To all you guys that have ever curbed or scraped your rims, tell us your story.

Welcome to the "club". There's a lot of us on here that feel your pain.

Oof. Sorry for your pain. I've been there.

FInd a good rim repair place nearby, preferably a somewhere that will strip, re-powder coat, and machine the face of the wheel, as opposed to one of those trailer "come to you" repair guys that just buff and clear coat the wheel.

Mine cost about $200 to repair.

It’s bound to happen eventually, just doesn’t feel good when it does. So far touch wood, not in mine after 2 years but I have no doubt I’ve jinxed myself after posting this. Easier said then done, but use the 360° camera whenever you can, it helps.

It sucks when this happens but on the plus side it looks like a glancing blow, that should be easily repaired & only you will know.

Yeh it doesn’t look too bad for curb rash. Like you said, most cars have it to some extent. However there are also lots of bad drivers out there who don’t really care about their cars too. I don’t think you are one of those but accidents happen. It can be fixed at a small cost at least.

Did the same thing the other day and way worse than yours by the looks of things. Spent 2 hours sitting outside of the vets office. Due to covid precautions they won't let anyone inside and you know what that means...no bathrooms. After finally getting my doggie back, rushed to the nearest Mickey d's with my back teeth floating as they say. Dumbass in front of me in a minivan stopped about 8 feet short of the car in front of him. Thus blocking me by about 2 feet from turning in to the mcd driveway. So tantalizingly close. Finally he seemed to remember he had a rear view and side mirrors and actually noticed I was angled to turn and blocked by him. He kindly moved up 1.5 feet, not two of course. Distracted and desperate, I squeaked that thing in there and heard that horrible crunch and grind from the passenger rear. Absolutely crest fallen after only a couple of weeks of ownership. My last car I owned for 3 years and not once did I do something this dumb. Oh well such is life I guess. So OP don't feel bad you are far from alone in this one!

Had mine for year and a half before I produced the same size rash on one of my rims. I was bummed for about a week. I leased my car and I remember the last words sales guy said to me before taking possession. He said do not contact any curbs or you will be dinged 500 per damaged rim upon returning vehicle.
I know tires will be toast by that point also - Thoughts of purchasing car when end of lease arrives are prevalent now.

Lol! Does anybody else need to learn where the wheels are on this car?

Yours is a doodle, hardly worthy of the word "scrap"; hardly a rash. It didn't really even raise any metal.

If you try wet sandpaper (lots of water) you might not even need any heavier grit. But if you do, go fairly light grit to take the worst of the scratches down; then go 2000 grit wet sandpaper (lots of water; did I already say that?).

And add to the poll. It is your civic duty, in my humble opinion. :D (the poll belies your anecdotal, "street-side survey"; maybe Stinger drivers are better than the average driver, for whatever complex of reasons :P)

Minor flesh wound. Good rim guy will have that fixed in a jiffy. Nothing to worry about you won’t even know it happened. So relax and treat yourself to a nice lunch.

It's a cruel world out there. The number of people who have no idea where the front end, rear, sides, wheels, etc., of their car are, is truly amazing. Slam their door open into the car next to them, if the door didn't open enough to allow their fat rear to exit the car, then slam their door even harder - believing that hard enough will either move the other car or push the side of it in enough to give them more room? 30 mph over the speed limit, weaving back and forth across multiple lanes, cutting in front of others, then slamming on the brakes because they are doing 40 mph more than the car they pulled in behind - all in the hopes of gaining one more position in the queue they think they are in. The gene pool really needs more thinning than Darwinism is currently providing. Apparently the pandemic just isn't enough, we need a really large asteroid.

It's funny how a little throw away thread where the OP gives guys an opportunity to drop the bravado and ego and have a laugh at themselves becomes a magnet for a few to exorcise their little demons. Be that complaining about the inferiority of others in general or an opportunity to get a little dig in to the newbies. Guys will be guys I suppose. Its a great world we live in!

It's so common on new cars with low profile tires and sidewalls that don't extend out past the face of the wheel. They look good, and handle well, but don't tolerate curbs well at all. When I was 16, I basically used to gutterball my old Grand Prix off of curbs and parking stops because 1.) i was 16 and didn't care, but also 2.) the tires were big and thick and the wheel came nowhere near anything.

I curb rashed the wheels on my old Altima SE-R big time. Once I was going around a corner at an intersection and I didn't notice how far the curb jutted out into the road. That was an incredible jolt and awful, awful noise. I am completely paranoid about the Stinger's wheels and I take wide turns around all the concrete islands in parking lots. I know it'll happen eventually, but I'm going to be so pissed off when it does, and I'll do everything I can to avoid it.

I have never curb rashed a car, dear hubby oh yeah he does. I have not let him drive my stinger .......................yet
I tend to be pretty cautious when I park my cars, my 06 prius still does not have a door ding.
