I would be financing the purchase so I probably will not tune until after I pay it off in a few years. I wouldn't want a problem with a $50k car that is not paid off yet and warranty is voided. Lol
Generally no additional mods are required for Stage 1 tunes.
If you have a "custom" tune (dyno, road or eTune) you can "modify" the tune to take advantage of a more free flowing CBE or intake. But even then, you are usually looking at very limited peak gains (and maybe a small bump across the rev range as well). But most of the time no big changes at the drag strip, track, etc. So intakes and CBE's are very low on the "bang for the buck" list.
Bang for the Buck List
- Piggyback
- Full ECU Tune (even more if you go with a "custom" tune)
- Higher octane fuel (race gas, EtOH mix [most stock fuel systems seem to be able to handle E25], etc.) and custom tune (or turn up the boost on the piggyback if you go that route).
- Downpipe and Stage 2 tune (even more if you go with a "custom" tune)
- Repeat 3
- Supporting mods to combat heat soak and/or detonation (bigger intercooler, Methanol Injection, etc.)
I have been mod'ing turbo cars for a long time. I used to be in the "what is a warranty" crowd
