Stinger Production to end in Q2 2022

If it does end production then surely these cars will become sort after due to limited run. They are also an icon for Kia. Maybe raising used car sales/classics?

Salesmen don't typically have any insider information anyway. Hell, they barely even know what they're selling and with the high turnover I'm sure Kia executives aren't rushing to share secret information with them.

While the 2020 G70 sold 7,910 units, the Stinger only shipped 3,525 units. The results from January to June this year were 4,437 G70s vs. 1,854 Stingers.


Assuming he's only using South Korea sales figures he should do more research and include worldwide sales when making such a comparison.

I don't know if he got the worldwide numbers wrong or chose to only use the numbers from a single market, but either one isn't great for his credibility.

yea... just in the us, 2020 stingers sold 12.5k alone so.. by comparison, audi a5/s5 in all trims and body styles only sells in the 18k-22k a year... so i think it's competitive considering this includes, the coupe, convertible, and sportback of the a and s variety..

I saw this elsewhere: "A variety of analysts agree that the most problematic shortages will begin to ease in the third or fourth quarter of 2021, though it could take much of 2022 for the resulting chips to work their way through the supply chain to products."

After the market readjusts, things should go back to normal, just like the cycle with TP supplies—but without the added problem of hoarding.

Yes, I was looking back in late May, early June and two major dealers had nothing. They said when they get a GT1 in they would call me. Heard this from Kia a thousand times they never call. I went ahead and just bought out my lease. But was really wanting the 3.3 AWD. I got the 2.0t cause at the time I loved the car but wasn't sure about reliability and I was commuting to work, mpg was important. Had no issues 1.5 years in and I work from home now.

EV Stinger? Yes please!

The question is, would they be able to turn around an EV Stinger by 2022? I think it would make more sense to produce the Stinger for at least another year since they refreshed it and then bring out the EV model.

According to that blog (believe him or not) they are shutting down the Stinger production line in 2022 and retooling it to produce various EVs.

One thing I'll say is the Stinger is getting a bit old. They've been producing them since 2017. Six model years is senior citizen territory in the auto world (ignoring the old arsed Nissan Frontiers and Toyota 4runners). Kia doesn't usually go this long without a complete redesign. I think if the Stinger was sticking around we'd be seeing spy shots for it's replacement right about now. As it stands, IF Kia keeps the Stinger around it'll be 8+ years old before a Gen II is available. I can't think of any Kia model that has gone 8+ years without being completely redesigned.

Why do you think it must come out by 2022? The link only mentions that a Stinger of some sort is still in the Kia product portfolio going forward. It may not even be called Stinger anymore.

depends on the car it seems.. the 2006 sedona came out in 05 and went for 9 years til 2014, the 02 sorento for 8 years as well..

For shitzngiggs I just looked up how long Kia goes between designing/releasing a new generation of a current model since 2005.

Here's when the cars had a new generation release.

Forte: 2008, 2012, 2018
Rio: 2005, 2011, 2017
Cadenza: 2009, 2016
K900: 2012, 2018
Optima/K5: 2005, 2010, 2015, 2019
Sorento: 2009, 2014, 2020
Sportage: 2010, 2015, 2021
Sedona/Carnival: 2005, 2014, 2020
Soul: 2008, 2013, 2019

Only twice in the last 15 years has Kia waited longer than 6 years between generations (Cadenza and Sedona).

By the end of this year they should be manufacturing model year 2023 vehicles. That will make the Stinger 7 model years old with no replacement in sight.

If history is any indicator I'd bet these blog rumors are true.

1. If Kia does indeed end production of the ICE Stinger after the 2Q of 2022, that would mean no 2024MY (the 2023MY would have started production in the 2nd half of 2022).

2. As had previously speculated Kia doing an electric Stinger down the road (but more as a CUV-coupe), Kia could skip a MY or 2 (other manufacturers have done that).

So even if the typical Kia lifecycle is now 5-6 years, if there indeed is to be an electric Stinger, may not be til the 2025 or even 2026MY.

I have assumed the Stinger was at risk since I saw the K5. It fits much more in their market than the Stinger.

KIA confirmed with the dealership that I ordered my Stinger through, that 2023 will be the last year and production volume will be lower for the 2023 model. It’s supposed to be coming back as an EV or EV/hydrogen model in the future

IMO this version of the Stinger as we know it is finished, Kia will either offer a new version of the “Stinger” with a restyled body, trim etc + 3.5TT engine or the EV6 GT will become Kia’s new halo performance car moving forward, I believe the latter would be the most likely business case.
