Interesting. Hyundai and Kia are not supposed to be competing directly against each other. Looks like they might be.

Hyundai and Kia are not supposed to be competing directly against each other.

Says who? They have competed against each other for years.

Azera vs Cadenza
Optima vs Sonata
Elantra vs Forte
K900 vs Equus
Santa Fe vs Sorrento
Accent vs Rio
Ioniq vs Niro
Sportage vs Tuscan
Many ecteras...

If Hyundai releases a car to compete with the Stinger it would actually be in line with other moves the two have made over the last decade or so.

@Bobr My browser won't translate the page you posted. Looks like this car won't be offered with engines that can compete with the Stinger? Or is it going to be released at all?

"Hyundai has taken the wraps off a new sedan at the Beijing motor show, the Lafesta. The model, only to be sold in China for now, is based on the Hyundai Elantra, though it features a different suspension set-up.

The car’s styling takes more than a few design cues from the radical-looking Le Fil Rouge concept that was displayed just a month ago at the Geneva motor show. The Lafesta is a four-door sedan but sports a coupe-like swoopy roofline, and looks decidedly sporty. Expected to launch in China’s market by the end of this year, Hyundai plans to target younger affluent buyers with this model.

While the Le Fil Rouge concept was a larger-looking high-end model, the Lafesta, with its 4,660mm length and 2,700mm long wheelbase, is larger than the Elantra but smaller than the Sonata, and is expected to slot between the two in Hyundai’s China range.

It will be powered by two engine options – a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol and a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol – in varying states of tune from 130hp to 240hp. Both are paired to a seven-speed automatic transmission powering the front wheels.

While there is no word on Hyundai bringing the Lafesta to India, as the model is based on the Elantra sold here, it has potential for our market."

It is my understanding that Hyundai and Kia are partial co-owners of the same big Hyundai corporation, much like GM with Chevy, Pontiac, Buick, Cadillac. Similar stuff but not a simple re-badging. They compete, but not directly.

Hyundai Motor Group owns "only" something like 35% of Kia Motors. Conversely, GM outright owns Chevy, Buick, Cadillac, Holden, GMC, etc. So the two auto groups (GM vs Hyundai Motor) aren't really on the same plane.

The way the auto industry is set-up they (Kia/Hyundai) have no choice but to compete against each other. They each make vehicles based on class (sub-compact, compact, mid-size, full-size, etc). To compete on the world stage they have to build cars for each class. And building cars for each class instantly puts them in direct competition with each other. The only way it could be avoided is if one was willing to build a crappy product to ensure the other's success.

Looks a bit risky to me. With the mass stampede away from sedans to "crossovers" and UV's it doesn't look like a normally powered Stinger clone would be very attractive to very many buyers. JMHO.

Yes, engines looks very weak, article says 1.4 T-GDI and 1.6 T-GDI with 130-204 HP. Length is 4660 mm, wheelbase 2700mm.

Tail lights were inspired by the new Audi A7 imho :)

That name! Sounds like something that happens to a wound if not properly cared for.

Not even close :p

No, seems global, maybe Chinese first. Russian market even not considered looks as (stake is too small). Just the article is Russian (and it has more info and more photos than others I tried to find).

Lucky Kia launched the Stinger first. This Hyundai version isn't as handsome.

This is not an equivalent. It looks much cheaper and not performance oriented.
