Stinger cabin temperature

Is the actual charging pad hot when not in use? Or the front cup holder is hot making you think it's the adjacent wireless charging pad heating it up?

I'm in the US and thus am not blessed with the wireless charger on my Stinger, but I noticed on recent road trip from Seattle to Vancouver that the center tunnel definitely gets warm after driving long distance. The bottom of the center console is warm to the touch. I think that may be the heat you're experiencing?

Correct. The pad is physically hot to the touch when not in use.

It also was -3 celsius today on my trip so it wasn't from lack of cooling,

The wireless charging was deactivated in my case.

In general, a charging pad is not supposed to be putting out power until it detects a receiver. If you use a desktop pad, they typically have an LED that either changes color or simply lights up when charging.

If there is no receiver, the pad would indeed get hot because all of the energy is being wasted by the coil, instead of transferred to the receiver and subsequently to the phone battery.

I can't imagine Kia would have installed a pad that is running in charge mode at all times, although it might be a defect of some type..

It probably has nothing to do with the Charging port, and probably down to the issue another person had with transmission tunnel. Seems not to affect many cars, but there are some - therefore probably down to poor insulation or lack of it installed.

It’s heat from the drivetrain area, in particular the exhausts which don’t have enough heat shield in that area. Go see the dealer to fix as it’s a known issue.

Ok, I noticed last night as i was playing with my settings that the charging system was in fact deactivated. So today i turned it on and a friend of my has an Iphone X that supports the wireless charging, and the light activated. No noticeable heat, but i had limited time (like 5 min). I monitored the pad while i drove home, I have a 45 min commute and noticed very little heat. Maybe it was a one off.
I will keep an eye on it and if it happens again i will be bring it in to East Side Kia and have them take a look.

Clearly Canadian what dealership did you purchase your Stinger at?

I will bring this up when i head in to the dealership if required.

Cheers

South Kia in Edmonton...I would be completely shocked if the heat problem had anything to do with the wireless charging. The heat was like an oven in there.

I'm going to stick my neck out and say you're probably right. I believe its all coming from the non insulated transmission tunnel area. The bad news for you guys up there is wait for summer. Hotter days on a decent sustained drive and my left leg is scorched. I won't go on because I've said it all before. When my car goes in for its next service ill mentioned I'm not an isolated incident.

My whole car is like that, all along the console and down in the footwell.

I am assuming people have checked that they do not have the independent setting for heating and cooling in the rear of the car on full hot? The vents for the rear HVAC presumably go through/under the centre console by the looks of it. I am flabbergasted that KIA has not advertised three-zone HVAC as a feature of the car. Very few non-SUVs or mini-vans have separate HVAC for the rear seat. Usually just a flow control, if anything. But I haven't seen this great feature listed or mentioned even once anywhere by anyone in a publication.

Must be a Canadian feature. Just flow control on my GT2 in the states.

You have no temperature dial in between the two round vents? The vents don't have the same flow control dials in the centre as the ones on the dash?

Yeah, that 100% exists on the US model. I have it on my GT2. It's a standard feature of most cars.

Yeah, but I don't think that is a temperature control, just a flow control.

No, it's a temperature control. The flow control is (obviously) the twist knobs on each vent.

There's a reason why it ranges from blue to red.

Have to take your word for it. I refuse to drive from the back seat.

You and others shouldn't be surprised when the console gets warm if the rear heat is on full on a warm day!
I guarantee you this isnt the issue. My heat has never been on. Its coming from the front and will be the non insulated heater core pipe that runs into the cabin. Kia Aust are aware of it, so far they are not interested.

It may not be it, but it will put out heat if you put it up to the red area, even if the airconditioning is on.

Going back to the issue, you're most likely correct about the transmission tunnel. I noticed when I was doing my wireless charging swap, the area underneath the cupholders were quite warm/hot. However, I suspect if it were insulated, it would overheat. Must just be a poor implementation.
