I'm a long distance driver, not a track junkie. So my GT2 is bone-stock. I just returned from a road trip from SW Missouri to Michigan and back, mostly on interstate highways running 77mph in 70mph zones. Here are some impressions on the Stinger after a couple of months.

Running in Comfort mode, the car is very comfortable, the suspension is adequately firm yet not harsh. Interior noise levels are very good which allows the HK sound system to do its thing. I'm running on the 19" tires which are probably more quiet than the all-weather tires. A better sound system would be a waste of money, as this one is better than the road noise with which it competes. And this car does not like me sitting in the car running the radio when the engine is off, presumably due to the 750W current draw from the battery. The system is, effectively, only of use while driving. So two votes here, one for the quality of the system, the other against not being able to use it without the engine running while waiting for the wife at the airport.

One thing I have not heard from other owners is switch positions. The trunk and gas cap cover release switches are obscured by the steering wheel in my favored seating position. No big deal, just a bit annoying when trying to press them while seated in the car. The mirror switches are also not my favorite locations. My wife somehow always manages to press one of them without realizing it, then because she refuses to RTFM, she complains that the mirrors are "not working." I have mine set to retract when locked, and to tilt down when backing. I'm still trying to teach her how the switch positions relate to those features.

The HUD in the GT2 is nice, but I wish they had incorporated turn signals into the display. In my seating position, the green blinker lights on the dash are hidden behind the top of the steering wheel. Yeah, I know that's my body position problem, but I would like to be able to see the lights if the steering wheel fails to cancel the turn signal on a gradual turn and I show my inattention to the world by driving down the road with my blinker on, like the old geezer I am. I can be rather paranoid about things like that.:D

As mentioned above, I ran in Comfort mode on the trip. I considered Eco mode, but I think that probably just alters transmission shift points to maintain lower RPM shifts, and I don't like lugging a turbocharged engine. I'll experiment a bit with that mode later. Suffice to say that my digital mileage readout on the dash varied between 27.3 and 29.3 with an estimated average of close to 28 mpg running 77mph most of the time with the air conditioner on and a loaded car with two or three adults and luggage compartment full. I find that rather amazing with an engine just barely broken in. Why Kia is only showing 25mpg highway mileage is very strange, and this car will push 30 easily at lower speeds. The aerodynamics do seem to help mileage, however, as speeds over 65 or so really kill mileage on my '05 GTO (6.0L LS2) while the Stinger seems almost not to notice.

Build quality continues to please me. No squeaks or rattles. There is some tire thump over expansion joints, but this year was a terrible year for Michigan roads and there was a lot of damage to avoid. I managed to get back home without cracking a wheel. So far everything continues to work as intended and I have had no repairs or complaints with the body or electrical systems. The front wheel vents do get filled with little rocks on roads still littered with winter debris or if you wander off pavement onto dirt or gravel roads. But nothing showed up in the vents after the Michigan trip, so this is not much of a factor. I wash my car at home with a hose and cleaning the vents is simple. No visible wear on the nappa leather seats (black, and I do use the seat retraction setting for getting in and out.) I did buy a set of Stinger all-weather mats to replace the carpet mats and they are perfect with a surrounding lip to keep mud and water contained, and they fit the floor hooks to keep them in place. I can't imagine WeatherTech being any better if and when they decide to make some for the Stinger. If you consider OEM mats, note that the RWD and AWD mats are different, presumably because of drive shaft tunnel shape differences.

I have also had no problems with rock chips and paint (HiChroma Red.) I cleaned a mass of insects from the front after the trip. Hopefully the aerodynamics in front combined with the rake-angle of the windshield will help prevent a chip or crack. My wife reported a rock on the windshield but a very close inspection showed no damage. The windshield on the GT2 with HUD is around $2,000, I've heard. So I have armed myself with two windshield repair kits which I keep in the back, and I've altered my driving a bit to try and avoid rocks. There is no way to avoid a stone from a passing truck in the opposing lane, but I now stay well back of semi's and always move to the right or left side of the lane if they stray onto the shoulder ahead of me where they might pick up a rock. I also watch my distance behind pickups which often have coarse tire tread and no mudflaps, especially the 3/4 and 1-tons. All you can do is play the percentages and hope you aren't next.

Checking the engine oil level at 6K (I changed oil at 2K) shows no oil use and no significant discoloration, so the Mobil 1 I'm using is holding up nicely based on a visual inspection and the rings are seated after a careful break-in.

This is one beautiful car. :)

Nice reveiw! Thanks

Appreciate the thoughtful and informative review, @mldavis2 !

I just came from a 600 mile trip yesterday (all in one day, all in comfort mode) and avg mpg was 26.5 with avg speed of about 80-82 mixed with some 90 mph accelerated passing of slower vehicles. I'd imagine I could get 27+ easily if I were closer to 75 mph without popping 90mph overtakes. It was a great "grand touring" experience - seats felt great (my back isn't tight and sore), wind/road noise was acceptable but I could definitely tell it could be quieter if it had better sound damping in the rear hatchback area, no rattles.

My only gripe is that it should have an 18-20 gallon tank and maybe a little sound deadening under the rear hatch portion of the car.

I , too, have been disappointed by the uselessness of the HK system when not running--no more "driveway moments" for me. :( I'll just have to drive around the block a few times if an amazing piece of music or a fascinating NPR story comes on just as I'm about to arrive home, where my engine running bothers the neighbors.

I also agree about the position of the turn signal dash indicators--and that's a brilliant suggestion that it should have been included on the HUD, although it would only help those of us with the top trim. Of the two Stingers I've seen actually on the road (as opposed to parked), one drove for at least 2 miles with the left signal on. I've caught myself doing it, too. Yeah, I'm a geezer.

I was spoiled by my Grand Prix, which had an mpg readout on the center console. It encouraged me to constantly monitor my driving habits for maximum mileage. Unfortunately, I haven't adjusted to pay attention to my mileage in the Stinger, and have lapsed into some bad driving habits (like accelerating every time a sporty German, Dodge, or pony car comes alongside, haha). I was appalled to return from a Target run yesterday--short drive, bad traffic, air conditioning on--and see it read 12.4. Yikes! Gotta pay more attention, as that's not acceptable.

I may have more to say about the seats later. Lately I'm not thrilled. The other day, when I got in the seat felt less supportive, like the bottom had dropped out. The next day I felt like I was recovering from a workout. I either need an adjustment to the seat or an adjustment to my spine. I'll work on the seat today.

I'm heading out Sunday on a "longish" daytrip, and will probably report more about mileage and the seat.

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
I also found that while cruising on the freeway, as long as adaptive cruise is on, I seem to get about the same mpg whether I'm going 60mph or 80mph. Might as well go faster! :D

just to add a bit from the opposite end of the spectrum i've road tripped the shit out of this car, around 11k miles in 2.5 months

I've ran it 6 hours straight in sports mode doing 80-90 regularly, not a problem for this thing, gas mileage sucks but hey that's to be expected

fantastic grand tourer.

It never shifts into high gear if you're in Sport mode, right? That'll kill the mileage when doing 80-90...

Agreed on the power usage with just Acc or Ign on. I have a 13.7V power supply in my garage and even with that hooked up the car was telling me to turn the engine on. Apparently it cannot read actual real time voltage. Not a huge bother to me.

I also do not care for the mirror switch location, too easy to hit unintended when closing the door using the door grab.

For MPG, i am curious, did you actually do the "math" to compare? I have noticed the readouts on the dash are a bit "optimistic" when i divide actual miles by gallons used. I have not had any long trips but my work commute is 21 miles under varying free way conditions. ECO mode does seem to provide a bit better MPG from my actual testing. Approx 2-3mpg better versus comfort. If i could get an actual of 27-29 on long trips with heavy cruise use that would be amazing. I too would also like to see a slightly larger fuel capacity.

Cracked my windshield 2 hours after having it tinted. Damn AZ roads. Nothing you do here, aside from driving at 3a, can mitigate this. Rock hit very low, on the "black" lower area just above the wiper arm and spidered it immediately. Mobile dude came and filled it next morning so hopefully will be ok.

HUD improvements would be awesome. Blinkers would be nice, to me, RPM and Gear Indication would be great.

Only have 1500 miles on mine now so nothing to report on oil yet. The oil catch can does seem to be gathering "crud" so i suppose that is good and bad depending on how you look at it. Good its getting caught, bad its getting produced.

Cheers

I agree with you about the green array of indicator lights on the dash...the way I sit and have the steering wheel positioned makes it difficult to see the LKA, etc icons.

Are not the LKA monitors in the HUD? mine are (Limited) as for the blinkers i just use the 3 sec delay one tap option i am usely where i need to be with in the 3 ticks.. mostly highway driven here with almost 9000 km and i tend to keep my eyes up front.. hate speed limits.

Yes @mldavis2 I am loving this Car subtle quirks and all.

I have a base GT so no HUD here.

Your trim levels are different, but in the U.S., only the GT2 had the HUD. LKA is part of the DriveWise package (I think) and is available as an option on all levels.

Agreed, after being able to leave the ACC on on my Infiniti without having a reminder every 30 secs to turn on my engine and shutting everything off, this is one of the few things I dislike about the Stinger. I understand the purpose of having the engine running, but I think the implementation of the fail safe by KIA is not appropiate. The fail safe is time triggered not voltage triggered, so I think KIA needs to increase the interval for the warning to appear. On my Infiniti the interval was 10 mins before the a warning message was displayed, 5 mins later the radio and all accesories will shut off automatically.

I always seem to ask my self this question. When people say they arent track junkies and just want a comfortable car curious why g80 wasnt consideration? GT2 really isnt the pinnacle of comfy road trip cars - many cars have far more comfortable seats and overall ride quality. The suspension even in comfort can be jarring and send booming noise into cabin when hit a sharp bump. Lack of undercoating allows sounds of car to come into cabin. You dont need Brembo brakes in comfy road car nor do you need a mechanical diff which will eventually need to be serviced - so paying for capability not needed. Getting in and out of Stinger is tough with coupe like roof line. The fast steering on car makes car nervous as well - not really ultimalte highway cruiser feel. So yes while car isnt something that you would haul out to track it is a driving enthusiast car in many ways where one would expect some compromises on comfort etc.

For me suspension is a real weak point as it isnt like a new gen Cadillac or Mercedes in terms of ride quality but doesnt perform well in sporty conditions when road surface is uneven. Really really odd combo that I cant figure out. Its like the car was originally designed for sportier suspension and someone in Kia made call late in design lets put softer suspension under the car as US market wont tolerate uncomfortable ride.

I had a g80 and traded it in for the Stinger, the Stinger has comfier seats, when on smooth roads and long hauls without road issues it surprisingly is the comfier ride. Now road noise and rougher roads you feel more in the Kia like u said due to suspension, but I was surprised to say the least that my stinger seats were noticeably comfier then the G80. G80 has a larger interior and cabin feel and it feels more "solid" but it's also much heavier and you notice it when trying to do anything remotely dynamic.

from experience though actual seat comfort goes to the stinger hands down, I'm able to sit comfortably w/o issue in that chair much longer then the G80

Agreed, a tighter suspension would have done wonders for this car! I really like that this car is a good mix of both daily driver and enthusiast, or you could say enthusiast and daily driver. Either way works. I would even be ok with a stiffer suspension in sport mode only.

Perhaps some of these items can be handled via coding/programming update. For instance, the voltage issue could certainly be amended with regard to warning time delay, i would also think the electronic dampers could be tuned via a programming update to stiffen up more during certain modes. OR the idea was to offer a more sporty version after the fact. All articles seem to point to the fact that Kia intends to continue to offer "limited" or "special" editions.

I am hopeful that someone somewhere will crack the canbus logic and thus allow user to manually code/tune/mod the ECU and Individual Module Logic.
