Ok, so now that people have installed the mesh and have been driving around for awhile, does it really reduce the amount of road grime coming out of the side vents? Is it noticeable enough to warrant this simple DIY mod?

I have found that it keeps all the rocks and debris out and we have lots of that to spare in AZ!! I dont notice any restriction to airflow either.

Ha ha, yes, corrosion is not something i tend to worry about in AZ...good catch on that one! The pack i posted actually came with two full sheets which was enough to produce about 6 vents so i have extra should they become unusable or less appealing to the eye!

Hadn’t really had a problem with this until today when I drove through a street that had patches resurfaced and then for the next 5-10 minutes had the random clinking of rocks coming out of the vents as I drove, well past the roadworks. Thankfully no paint chips on my doors that I’ve noticed but has convinced me I need to track down some mesh and install it. I’ve seen my bonnet chip easily with rocks thrown from other cars, don’t want my doors chipped by my own car.

Our city, in their infinite wisdom and exemplary courtesy, thinks that the solution to fixing frost heaves in the roads is to lay down tiny road crush and let the tires of normal traffic compact it down and then not clean up said road crush for about 3 weeks. Mud flaps are being installed tomorrow and I have some mesh on order for the vents coming from the UK. I wonder if I can back-charge that to the city, lol.

Hi everyone. I recently installed the mesh on both vents using the template that @AV8R made (thanks again)! The passenger side fit perfectly and the lining is tight enough to push down the mesh into place. However, the driver side lining is more “loose” and does not hold up the mesh as tightly as the driver side. I do recall that when I cut the mesh according to the template, it was slightly too small so I cut another one with about 1/2 inch wider and taller. It was very hard to slip it in between the linings but it managed to slip in, though the mesh is bent inwards very slightly.

I drove it for 3 days in the Calgary slow and it blocked off all the gravel and rocks just fine. That being said, how worried should I be in terms of water getting in between the linings and causing rust? As I said, the driver side lining does overlap the mesh but not nearly as tight as the passenger side.

I wouldn’t worry too much as that area is mostly plastic. Its odd though that you had issues with one side as i have installed a few on cars now and had no issues. If it sits in the recessed lip it will not move. The lining goes over the top and it stays in place.
The other reason is the thickness of mesh. If you are using right mesh it wont bend much. Mine is so thick i struggled with tin snips to cut it out. I use the security door screen mesh made from stainless steel. Each strand of the mesh is about 1-2 mm thick. Never use the fine mesh as it blocks air flow.
