Service test drive... thoughts?

If you get to know the guy, it might not rub you the wrong way. Had a Lexus tech that owned a car similar to mine, and he turned out to be a great tech and resource for information after I got to know him. Trusted him implicitly when he worked on my car, I even encouraged him to lay into it on one of his test drives just so I could hear my own car from the "outside."

In addition to this, find out how many Stinger trained techs there are. He may be the only one and anything beyond an oil change will require him to do it. Get to know and trust him.

What was the car in for?

Most important question in this thread.

I think some spirited runs and heavier throttle can be justified by an ignition component replacement ...

Some. But just some.

I understand testing the car a bit, just felt it was a bit more than was necessary.

... I felt like it was only fair to post the whole thing ...

Agreed, it did seem a bit much. And you were right to post the whole thing.

... For an oil change and windscreen water top up, I'd be a little more suspect.

I'd be wayyyyy more than "suspect" if it were just an oil change.

Simple oil changes require absolutely no test drives whatsoever.

If you get to know the guy, it might not rub you the wrong way ...

Maybe he should take him out for lunch too? Seriously ...

... Get to know and trust him.

Trust but verify.

For a coil replacement I see no issues at all with that video. Those mechanics are basically foaming at the mouth when one of those comes in and they get to test drive it, I think he kept his composure pretty well. Keep in mind he's going to need drive it a few different ways to ensure it's not missing or anything under light to heavy throttle.

Took my guy to lunch. When labor rates are $140 and he works actual time and not book time, your tech gets you the best loaner car, and you can trust him, lunch is a small price to pay for what you get in return. To each their own though...

Like others said, oil change this would not be good but for the coil change, I see nothing wrong with it. Didn't even turn the radio on if he was out for a joy ride I'm sure he'd be blasting music I think he was actually listening for any problems. I do agree he should probably ware his seatbelt.

It depends. On a lot of things.

When a previous car I had was in for warranty repairs lasting weeks and the mechanic worked in Summer without air conditioning, I bought lunch for all of the workers in the service department.

When people worked hours on lawn care or driveway repair on my small property, I also tipped.

Doing something out of charity is different from doing it while expecting something in return.

Oh well, do what an informed, discerning, and educated conscience guides you to do ...

Where is this magical place with roads like a pool table and barely enough other cars to keep it interesting?
My thought exactly. :D

I think you have misunderstood me. The lunches were to talk cars and build a professional relationship around food. The fact that I paid for it was just a way of showing my thanks for him taking his time to do something he didn't have to do. Based on your last post, I think we are in agreement that showing this gratitude when someone goes out of their way for you, excels at their job, or engages in other behavior that directly or indirectly benefits you, is appropriate.

"Build a professional relationship"? Umm, ok.

Like I said, do what an informed, discerning, and educated conscience guides you to do ...

Ignition issues have to be tested under load.
