I have the top model Kia Stinger which is equipped with 4 very good cameras. With regards to security, my question is why do I need to spend $300-1000 for additional security and recordable cameras. Is there any way the 4 on-board cameras can be used for this? I have heard of this ability on other, so called high end cars. Secondly is there an additional purchase of equipment that could make this happen? Thx in advance for your responses.

Good question! I've wondered the same, and the only answer I'm thinking of is no one has bothered to figure it out yet. Definitely watching this thread.

I'll watch with interest.

It doesn't seem feasible. It would require tapping into the infotainment system or camera wiring and adding some kind of video storage device. At that point, your money would be better spend on a standalone dash cam. The resolution of each of our cameras is very low compared to most dash cams. If it were something reasonable to do, it would have been done already on more mass-produced cars and sold as an aftermarket device.

The K5 will have a Drive Video Record System as seen here. Maybe future models of the Stinger will implement it, but as it relies on infotainment features it probably won't be possible to add to older models.

More specifically, if there is a way to utilize the four cameras already present on the Stinger to record, just like a dash cam
You cannot it would have to be a software change from Kia and they would have to add a storage unit for those videos, just buy thinkware dash cam you won't regret it.

I would also submit that while the cameras are more or less well suited for their intended purpose -- making sure you don't hit anything while parking or pulling out -- they aren't "good" cameras. The resolution and sensor quality needed for usable security and/or dashcam footage is surprisingly high; especially at night. Plus the cameras are positioned and aimed for parking / pull-out rather than for general security and recording.

Even if it were possible on a DIY level that doesnt kill your wallet, it would be utterly pointless because the resolution of the 4 cameras is complete garbage compared to even other cars in the Kia/Hyundai group.

Wow, I have never seen another manufacturer have this! I'm a fan and now a possible buyer.

Wow, so maybe the the largest hardware limitation would be the lack of storage in the Stinger? The software might be enough where it probably won't happen.
