Roll Call! Who's Test-Driven a Kia Stinger?

Since most of the test drives and reviews are on the 3.3TT - I wan't to throw one in for the 2.0T.

This is by a Korean journalist. There's English subtitle available, just click the CC button and choose English.

I believe the car they reviewed was the full-spec 2.0T, it's the Korean market model of course.

Good review. If we had a 2.0T with GT styling - I'd be open to it here in the U.S. The truth is, most of my driving occurs with my wife in the car and since she's been in an accident she's too uncomfortable with fast driving. Unfortunately, you can't get GT styling. I may be out of the loop but I think there might be a missing technology option or two missing from the 2.0T packages as well.

I finally got to drive a GT1 RWD today. (I plan to buy a GT2.) I only drove surface streets, for about 20-25 minutes. The freeway was backed up, so this was probably as good as I could have managed. This car is exactly what I expected it to be--great!

Despite the lack of freeway, I did momentarily get that silly Stinger grin you see in all the You Tube reviews; when traffic cleared ahead of me, I gassed it for a block-and-a-half, and, my gosh, it really does pin you back into the seat. Several of you commented on how easy the car is to control, and I totally agree. Cornering felt good, although given traffic, I only was able to push it a couple of times. Don't take this as an insult, as I don't mean it that way--this is as close to my ancient Grand Prix GT in terms of comfort, great ergonomics, good brake feel, and responsiveness, as any car I've tested so far. My current car reincarnated to this century with more power, which is exactly what I've been searching for.

I did get several opportunities to experience the idle stop & go, and it wasn't as annoying as I remembered it from a rental I drove last year (the make and model of which I don't remember, as it deserves). Despite it being a hot day and having the air conditioning running (which is great, by the way), I never really noticed power cut out, but only noticed when it started up again--and then possibly only because I was watching for it.

Since I've sat in the car several times, I was surprised that the rear window doesn't even fill the rear view mirror. Kind of annoying.

I didn't test the sound system. When I got in, the radio was tuned to the local Mexican pop music station, which really doesn't have a strong signal, and I'm hoping the tinny sound was the bad reception or maybe the way they'd tuned it. I wanted to spend the rest of the time asking questions, so I turned it off and didn't get to test it out on my usual weird variety of music. Next time.

After past disappointing experiences with other dealers, I had finally decided to try the Auto Club referral program, which means I was dealing with the fleet office. Unfortunately, that doesn't put an end to the blasted dealer markup, which at this dealer, Kia of Cerritos, is $5000--the low end for dealers I've heard from so far. This puts the total price of the car up at $60k, with tax, etc. I'm going to have to think about this. The white GT2 I'm interested in isn't scheduled to arrive until mid-January, so I have a little time to either get used to the idea, fall for a less expensive car (unlikely), or play the lottery.

The 360º camera came up, and this rep said they were told that the factory had to rush the U.S. cars into production and this was a parts supply problem. Sorry, Canada, but they should have saved those parts for some of us, since we're paying more. :(

Final interesting point, if it can be believed. The rep told me that they don't know what color the interiors of the white GT2s coming in will be, and he mentioned black, merlot, and brown (!!). I said only black was on the configurator, and he didn't back down--he says they've been told they could come with any of those colors. Have any of you heard anything similar?

Thank you for sharing this review. @eljay. If I were you, I'd wait a bit. $60k for the Stinger is too much. Be patient and let the price come down a bit. We want to be making good choices here and paying an extra $10 or so for nothing is not the greatest idea. At least not in my opinion. You'll get the same exact car for nearly $10k less if you just give it some time.

But I can understand the sense of urgency. The car really is as good as we've been hearing. And it seems like the absolute perfect car for you. That rear window really is pretty small, huh? I think the audio system will improve over time with break-in...

I totally agree that the price is--well, highway robbery, even though I'm including in that price close to $5k that goes to the government, not Kia, because of the auto tax for my zip code. It's a great disappointment after waiting almost a year for this car. But it's my current car, rather than me, you need to tell to be patient! If she needs one major repair, I'll be forced to buy a car I don't like nearly as much as the Stinger, which I will have to grudgingly drive until it's time to trade it in on the golf cart in which I will undoubtedly be terrorizing the other old ladies at the senior living facility. So if anyone hears of a SoCal dealership selling at MSRP, I'm interested! (Aren't we all!)

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
I recall the ventilation on the Napa leather as having a nice texture. I was in an x3 today and it had no such thing.

Send a message to two or three dealers in your area, all in the same email (carbon copy) stating that you're interested in buying a Stinger at MSRP - and to contact you when they're ready to do that. That will be better than waiting to hear the prices have come down after it's too late and the inventory is gone...

Thanks for the advice--yes, I've done my own version of that, in that each of the three dealers that are so far "courting" me knows that I have at least two other dealers who want to work with me and that I object to the markup. Each tells me I'm on top of their list to be contacted when a white GT2 comes in, and that appears to be the next color coming to CA from the plant.

I just got a call from yet another rep from Cerritos, who didn't seem to be aware that I'd been there for a test drive yesterday, and this one says the markup is $10k on the GT2, not $5k as yesterday's fleet rep told me. In what I hope was a manner that won't sever any future relationship, I blew a gasket. In his response, I detected a slight glimmer of hope that the markup will become negotiable--but only a slight glimmer. Almost immediately after, I got a call from Alhambra, checking to see if I'd been in to test drive--they were the dealer that had failed to have a car prepped for a drive when I had come in, and this is the 3rd person to call checking on whether I'd ever come in--incredibly dysfunctional operation.

I'm hoping a lot of this nonsense resolves (and the markup dissolves) when they actually have the car I want on the lot. Right now they won't--actually, can't--deal because they don't have the car. We'll see.

It sounds like they're aware of your frustration. And who wouldn't be frustrated? It's really crazy and they need to get on the ball immediately...

Test drove it the other day car drives really great, picks up speed fast even at stand still (3.3T AWD). Paddle shifts were pretty crisp and instant.

Engine didn't sound as good as my 2012 jag XF 5.0 v8 but was good for my tastes for a twin turbo v6 . More deeper sounds than Audi BMW style which I like. Car is much faster than my XF and just keeps on going after 120km u won't even realize how fast your going !

Sport and comfort mode is a huge difference as well which is cool it feels like ur driving 2 different cars.

Nice! Much faster than your 5.0 V8 Jaguar! And it's good to hear that there's apparently a world of difference between sport and comfort mode. That's the way it should be - and all too often, isn't...
