I am close to pulling the trigger on a GT2.

Most of my more car-knowledgable friends have been warning me off of buying a first year model vs waiting for the 2019.

I have been reading the forums and see that there seem to be some possible defective design with the leather seats (multiple people reporting poor durability).

Other than that - is anyone having serious issues that might suggest better off to wait for a second year model? If so, please list?

(I am hoping this might be a good catalog for all potential buyers?)

Aside from littlw things such a tailgate rattle, or the leather issues (which i havent personally observed) the only reason to wait, is for tech upgrades such 360 camera view and wireless charging to be added to future models and refinement of software(bt carplay or android auto someday maybe) as far as engine suspension and transmission have all been great, i dont regret for one second getting this car even though its a first year model. 6kmi. Goin strong, there is another guy who drove his awd gt2 acroas the country, has modded it and w 16kmi. Still runnin w no issues

There will be a couple things that crop up on a new model, but it's usually small things. This is my second new model from Ki. The first was our 16 Sorento. We had 1 recall on it for the accelerator pedal recall (cold solder joint) and a tb for a tube needing to be rerouted. Neither cused us a problem and we just had it done at routine maintenance visits.

Well if you look at the 2019 Limited GT Atlanticas(their only making 500) it’s the exact same as the 2018, they even had it at a press event. I can see them adding maybe 360 camera/heated rear seats/wireless phone charger/UVO remote app to the USA 2019 Stingers since all of those features are already on Stingers that are overseas and Canada. The 2019 Limited Atlanticas does come with all of those and I believe it’s limited to just the USA. KIA is dropping the same engine into the it’s flagship K900 for 2019 also.

Thanks for the replies. Im sure they will add some cool options - I am more referring to reports of ISSUES with the 1st year model than upgrades that may come (although why not comment on both!)

Aside from the few issues already stated, there isn't anything that would keep me from this purchase if I were in your shoes.

My GT2 is still perfect. No hatch rattle (TB does not apply to my car), no leather issues. No complaints. I look for excuses to drive the thing. I can't imagine sitting around if you are able to buy one, and letting the rest of us have fun. J.D. Power #1 ranking (all of Kia) for the past 2 years. 10 year/100,000 mile power train warranty in the U.S. Why not?

I am fairly certain nothing major will change since the Atlantic’s is limited and has everything we’re missing in the USA

Maybe you're a young adult, so you don't have the life perspective like me, a senior adult.
Your friends' suggestion are reasonably right.
Life goes by so soon, what man builds are not perfect, the first time, it improve over time.
Thing is enjoy what you want as soon as posible......go for it !!!

Love the car, once I drove it, the extras that are absent on the U.S. model just did not matter. The Stinger is just an awesome car to experience. I was at the point where I dreaded driving anywhere; now I love driving everywhere with the Stinger.

Yeah, I'd say if you want or even need the car now, then go for it. Nothing is really really wrong with this generation anyway.

Next gen will be better and possibly more refined surely - but then the 3rd generation will be even better anyway.

Waiting can be a good thing, but it's also a risk. Who knows the Stinger may get a bit more expensive in the second gen and we aren't even sure Kia will make a second gen at this point (but given the sales and how it is perceived, they'd be stupid not to continue).

Looking at the different parts, such as the chassis, transmission, and engine. They are all newly designed and launched with the Stinger or just a bit before. So I assume these part designs may stay relatively the same, just minor tweaks/improvements. The 2019 model year might just be a minor facelift... and for that reason, why not be someone who has the first gen Stinger?!

It's different if you are waiting for the next M3 - this Stinger is the first ever Stinger.

All models from every maker get better and more refined as we go. I got my 2013 Sorento and was amazed and it didn't even have a backup camera, now they come with a boatload of stuff standard. If you wait for the best, you will die before getting a car.

You'll read about issues because most people will complain about them, but far more owners have no issues and, so, you don't hear from them.

There's no technical issue that would prevent me from buying, but missing features (that are available in other markets) and color choices are. I'm not sinking this much into a vehicle only to regret not waiting when the next years model is exactly what I want.

One thing I've noticed after I got my GT is a lot more people are revving their engines next to me at traffic lights. SO weird. :D

The car has been out nearly a year in the Korean market already and no major issues. Only issues other than minor issues are from people tuning their cars. I wouldn't worry about the missing features either unless there is one you absolutely have to have.

Another reason to get one now, is so you'll be the first one on the block to get one. Everyone will be ogling over your car, but by the time several more show up, people will be like, meh I've already seen it.

The way I justify it to buy mine this year and not wait for 2019 model was if I buy it now, by 2019 I will have one less year to pay off my car. Unless you have the money to cash out the car and not take a car load from the bank then its a different matter. :ninja:
