Powder coating: what color would you choose for your wheels?

From what I've seen (limited sample) $500 for the full job is a very good price. Where are you located? I found a place in Atlanta that charged $400 just to powder coat. That didn't include taking the tires off the rims, storing the car for 5 days and then putting it back together. Most places I've found are happy to take the tires off and put them on, but few want to store the car. Have only found a few places that will do a turn-key job.

Pelham, Al.

The place is alloy wheel repair specialist, they're a nation wide franchise so the quality of work is going to vary from shop to shop. They told me I could drop the car off at 7 AM and pick it up by 5 PM the same day, we'll see!

Wow...are you sure they are powder coating and not painting? I suppose you could powder coat in one day, but I've talked with 3 shops and all of them say it's a 3 - 5 day job depending on the rim. They have to strip the existing finish and possibly sandblast as well, let it bake, cure, etc. Please post results. I dropped mine off today and will have it back next week. Will post pictures.

yup, I asked two different people and both said it would be powder coated and not painted. I'm stopping by their shop tomorrow to look at powder coat swatches, I'll make sure the 1 day turn around I was quoted was accurate. There are a ton of powder coat color options, but I'm not really sure how many of them can be color matched to a paint for the plastic center cap.

I think I've decided to go with a color called "forged charcoal". I talked to the guy at the shop about matching the stock black chrome and he told me it would be impossible to match with just a powder coat. We went through hundreds of color samples, nothing was that close. That slight bronze reflection at certain angles is what makes it so hard to match, oh well.

Looks great , can you post a few tight pics of the wheels too ?
Thanks

I got my car back a few days ago. I kept it simple and went with gloss black. Hard to tell what some of the other colors would look like so I took the easy way out. It took 6 days (including a weekend) from start to finish. I'm happy with the job.View attachment 19158View attachment 19158
Looks good! The only issue I have with gloss black is that when your tires aren't freshly dressed, they'll look less black than the wheel and that looks weird to me for some reason.

Wow, that I impressive turn around time and cheap as well. Nicely done. Out off curiosity, why did Costco pay for it?

Yeah, I'm really happy with the work, especially since it was a franchise location. Costco scratched up all 4 wheels when they rotated my tires, so they paid to get them powder coated. The tech didn't use the correct tool when he took the center caps off. In the end it worked out in my favor I think, I like the all gunmetal look over the stock look.

I like that too.. congrats.

Powdercoating, not for me im not a big fan of the factory wheels either. Id probably change to a combination of silver and black something in a 10 spoke configuation. But the Pc of the wheels is a improvement imo.

Oo, a dedicated powder coating thread. I must share here too (those who've seen already, my apologies):

Got her back and cleaned up, dropped off Tuesday at 4:30 PM and picked her up on Wednesday at 5, ended up being $600 total which Costco paid for 100%

Yeah, I remember you mentioning this fiasco a while back. That was a very professional response by Costco. Judging by the pics, gun metal suits very well.

would I pay $600 out of my pocket to PC the stock wheels? I'm not sure, I'm the kind of person that likes performance gains from that kind of money. My problem with the stock wheels is that the machined edges makes the wheel very "busy", PCing the entire thing a single color quiets it down nicely. If they were lighter I would keep them for sure, but since they're so heavy I may upgrade down the road, we'll see.

I bought my Stinger Friday. Dealer already had them powder coated. It’s a semi-gloss black. It’s not matte like most rims I’ve seen, but definitely not gloss. I honestly didn’t think I liked anything other that gloss black, but this color looks fantastic in person, especially on the Ceramic Silver. I’ve always felt that the darkish window tint pulled everything together and the dealer had that done as well. Every time I walk up to my new Stinger it feels like a dream, it looks sooooo sexy.
