So...looks like problem solved for now. When I first connected the player there was a message on screen that said "this device does not support media function". But just now I plugged it in and loaded a disc which was recognized and started to play. Case closed! I like the idea of having all my music on a usb drive, so another future project. Now all I need is an aux cable to connect my cassette tape player

Yea, that's ridiculous. You could just move your music over to your phone and have your entire CD library in your pocket everywhere you go. Or if you have a dumb phone just copy whatever music you want and paste it onto a USB flash drive. A flash drive will only cost you 15-20 bucks.
You have to digitize the music first,and if you aren't audio savvy they will be terrible quality, a good streaming service is the best option, but there are some who can't make the leap... so option 2
