It’s so cold in Chicago they’re setting the tracks on fire so the switching mechanisms don’t freeze. Also heard someone in the Midwest had to use a blowtorch to get into a locked building since the lock was frozen. Yes, 50s by early next week. Crazy.

That vision of the fire on the tracks made its way here to OZ.

We had a southerly change on Friday night got to a low of 69-70F had to close the windows and put a cover on.

The switches are built with gas burners alongside for this very reason - it's not rare to use them. Just a handy time for idiot media scribes to hype up the cold some more.

Yeah it's cold, but this isn't something unique to this particular blast of cold.

The vision looked impressive to me in Australia where intense cold like that is completely unknown.

I’m even more impressed to learn that the switches are built with gas burners alongside. I’d just assumed they threw petrol or something down and lit them up.
