So you own the plate for life?
If so, that's not too bad then. Here in PRIL it costs $151USD/yr for a standard random plate. Over the course of say 40 years that's over $6K USD. The tags here used to be $78USD/yr or even cheaper years ago. They've increased (like everything else) over time.
$3500AUD is ~ $2350USD so you're coming out ahead.
Ummm no...
Queensland $3500 for Prestige 7 letter plates and i own them for ever, rego is rego you cannot get away from paying it, but i can sell personal plates for a profit if possible or a loss probably and the next person only pays a $90 transfer fee into their name.
I have a few sets but this design was by far my stupidest idea, once you purchase the plate it doesn't matter if you put it on a vehicle or not.
I have some hanging on my wall i will one day sell at a loss no doubt....

From your own Qld Govt website transport registration number plate
It states as follows............
""It is important to note that any number plate issued to a vehicle, that includes personalised or customised plates, remains the property of the State of Queensland and must be surrendered to the Department of Transport and Main Roads, if required.
For personalised and customised plates, it is the number plate combination that is the property of the person to whom the plate is issued, not the physical number plate.""
