Octane Booster Acceptable for Tuning?

I just got the JB4 and switched out my spark plugs last night with a .024 gap. I am trying to decide which map to run, unfortunately I live in Utah where the best gas is 91 octane, but I really want to run map 2. Would using an octane booster with the 91 be acceptable? Or would it cause issues?

Log map2 and lets check it out! It's not just about octane it's also about air density (elevation, intake temps).

For octane booster it does wonders if it has MMT. Lucas is a good cheap variant, Boostane or Torco are more expensive options. NOS Race also works nicely.

Couple questions unrelated.

How do I push that brake booster grommet back into place? I can't get it back in there, and my hands are not small enough to fit down in there to push it in.

Also, when I choose map 2 on the jb4 connect, it shows map 2 on the main logging page. But under the user adjustment settings tab, it says map 6 boost under the first column.

What settings do I need to change in this fuel bias column when I hook up the fuel wires?

Do I have to mess with any other settings for anything else?

I just push it in with my hand but a stick or anything would work.

There are no setting changes required for fuel control wires.

The user adjustment page is global for all maps.

So I don’t need to input the numbers found here?

You can get special tools for that ... :p

So I got the fuel wires installed, but they don’t show anything on the user adjustment settings page.

Also the boost targets are less than they should be for map 2.

No fuel settings should show.

If you need tuning help just post a JB4 log to the n54tech JB4 support thread.

Thats for the old firmware. If you are on the newest firmware you dont need to.

So from what I read, I need to enable those fuel wires. Is that true? If so how do I do it?

I see this posted.

bit0 - Turn on to disable JB4 fuel control, also required for accurate AFR logging if fuel wires are NOT installed
bit1 - Turn on to enable fuel control adjustment by RPM, default values of 80 across will match internal mapping. With default setting JB4 uses internal settings for fuel control.
bit2 - Turn on to disable JB4 hot/cold water & oil temperature protection
bit3 - Turn on enable IAT/timing spoofing, requires wire added to JB4 harness and 6cyl setting for spoofing level
bit4 - Unassigned
bit5 - Unassigned
bit6 - Turn on if vehicle has an aftermarket flash map loaded to the ECU
bit7 - Unassigned

But I have no idea how to get to a screen where I can turn those on and off.

I also noticed that my transmission does not shift as smooth in sport mode wot, as it did before the tune. Is that normal?

I would check out the N54tech site. I dont believe you set values for that.

Do you have any race tracks close by? They often sell unleaded race gas at their pumps.

I’d be careful running e85 it’s very caustic stuff

In California we have a few stations that sell unleaded race gas . I ran a couple tanks with my piggy back. Very fun! But wasn’t worth risking reliability and warranty long term.

Fuel wires are automatically enabled on firmware 7 & 8. Only firmware 6 or older needs FUD Bit settings to be changed.

You shouldnt need any of those settings unless you feel the boost oscillations from firmware 6-8. However, all those settings are under “user adjustment settings”, then tap the 0 next to “future use D” for the list of options. Do not change them without confirming your firmware version, and what each “Bit0-Bit7” alters.

Lastly, the ECU will need time to adjust to the JB4, and the TCU has to relearn shift points, etc. It’s suggested to do a few WOT runs to give the ECU & TCU time to adapt. It also helps staying in Sport mode as other modes seem to shift too early and causes the transmission to struggle.

Hope that helps and as others mentioned it’s best to post questions on the JB4 thread or N54 forum for additional assistance.

How safe is it to run e85 on the 3.3TT? I just got the JB4 and wanted to try e85.

ALSO! Not so sure how to tune correctly for more power gains. Do I just set it to a map and it does all the work or do I have to customize tune to provide more power?

Thanks!

I've been running an E30 mix for about 9 months now. Put roughly 4 gallons on E85 and top off with 93. Works great on map 3 for me, no adjustments needed.

Platform loves E85, in moderation. Mix in 5-6 gallons to a full tank of pump gas and enjoy! :)

The ECU and JB4 do all the work when adding E85 so just select say map2 or map3.

Thank you for the reply and info.

Regarding the car and engine itself, no damage to the fuel pump or engine with e85 on JB4?

...which is great, if you live in an area where it's available. Here it is not. Not remotely worth it to me to make a 2+ hour traffic-bogged round trip to top up the tank with E85. My first stab at a booster product has been Royal Purple Max Boost...just to permit me to run Map 2 daily. In theory this might have me up to 94+ish (92 pump is as good as it gets here), seems to be working so far. Will I gain that much from switching to Torco or Boostane at 2x cost?
