Not tuning, adding performance parts

Hi everyone

I did some searching but figured posting about my situation might get a quicker/more accurate answer.

I liked the MBRP exhaust sound in videos, gonna get one of these. I'd also like to do HFC Downpipes + midpipe combo. Then cold air intake and potentially intercooler upgrade.

I saw someone post that if you add HFC Downpipes + mid pipe combo & exhaust you could get overboost issues that would require a tune to resolve. Is this true? If I add the exhaust & intake I know I won't get as significant performance increase as I would if a tune was done or JB4 added along with the new parts. I'm just hoping to get a significant enough performance increase without tuning because I know I'm sure to void warranty by tuning.

The exact question I guess is, if I add exhaust/intake performance parts, is there any concern for the car not working properly if I don't tune?

I don't believe the intake, mid pipe and cat back will cause you any issue with overboosting but the down pipes could. At that point, you'd want a JB4 with the EWG wires at minimum to get everything under control.

Any of those parts could cause you issues with warranty depending on what kind of failure occurs. However, you might be able to find a mod friendly dealer that would cut you some slack if you have any issues.

Replacing down pipes is kind of a medium-level-expertise tuning option for the Stinger. You can get overboost, you can get too little backpressure and the turbo seals blow, you need tuning to get it right and will need to log and adjust, most likely, and more than one person has snapped a stud on the turbo trying to get the downpipe loose.

If you're even asking about "can I get away without tuning", leave the downpipe alone.

Hi Pokkett,

The only time you will need to tune a vehicle when adding bolt on parts is if you are going to be swapping out your primaries.

That means that if you decide you want to install the Ultimate Performance Downpipe Combo Kit, you need to have a tune such as a Jb4 or Lap3.

If you install other performance parts from our store such as an exhaust, intake, secondary downpipes, etc you will not need to have any tune whatsoever.

If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to me in a message at any time and I would be glad to help out as best I can and get you a discount.

Cheers,
Daniel @ the K8 Stinger Store

Going to dispel some myths here.

There's no such thing as too little back pressure, this isn't a 2cycle. What you're looking for is exhaust scavenging. Here's a decent article explaining this. Scavenging and the Exhaust Backpressure Myth - MOTORDYNE Engineering

Also, the seals in the turbo aren't going to be affected but a different set of exhaust pipes. What blows Turbo seals is too much oil pressure.

I do agree with you on the not adding the downpipes without a tune though.

As for why you can overboost when you change down pipes it's a few things. They allow the exhaust gasses to leave the turbos at a faster rate, increasing boost and responsiveness. The factory tune however isn't calibrated for the larger pipes and the flow it brings so the EWGs don't activate in time to stop the boost from spiking. JB4 with the add on EWG wires will better compensate for this. Granted I'm over simplifying here.

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
Not going to argue about backpressure vs scavenging. Why do some people experience oil leaking, when they install new downpipes? If it's too much oil pressure, why is there too much oil pressure? Turbos spooling up too fast?

My guess would be it's from overboosting. Who's had this issue though? Perhaps the seals were already defective before hand?

I only seem to find that one poll with 1 guy that had the oil seeping from the turbo.

I regularly see cars, albeit not stingers, dump exhaust nearly out of the back of the turbo and they don't have these issues.

Just search for posts about cars "suddenly" going into limp mode with no boost after the owner changed the primary cats. There seems to be at least one every month that suddenly discovers this same thing.
But, your car. Feel free to try.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I'm going to go with intake, intercooler, and exhaust.

I just got a sick deal after my dad only put 15k miles during a 3 year lease. I bought out the lease.

I think getting a beefier sound and some intake fun will be cool for the time being. Probably order the HFC Primary so I don't discover it's no where to be found in 4-5 years when I'm ready to shrug off the warranty.

All good input! I think I have my answer :)
