Low Fuel Light?

Mine appears with what is around 25 miles to run and then offers GPS to nearest stations.

My gas light came on when I had 11 miles left on the cluster. What is weird was the last trip I made, leaving I fill up the gas tank and it estimate I have around 330 miles, however, on my total trip miles is 411 miles when the gas light come up is at 15 miles left. That is more then the 330 miles estimate before the trip. That could be due to me using the ECO mode on the Highway and cruise at 70-75 MPH.

Distance remaining is definitely tied to driving style and mode.

330-340 is fairly standard when i fill up...411 is 27+mpg so that is really good...must be flat where you live

Hopped in the car this arvo to drop my daughter somewhere only to find that my wife who had been out earlier had brought the car back empty. Which was annoying but gave me the opportunity to take one for the team and update my previous memory supplied figures. So this time the light came on with 34 km to empty. Which is close enough to the previous experiences of 37 km. I filled up with 22 km to empty and she took 55.26 L so about 5L remaining. I average about 10L/100km so probably about 50km range remaining. Which sounds about right because I would expect the estimated range of 22km to be on the low side to allow for a safety margin.

There you go.. 6l when the light came on.

Note that gas pumps can be WAY off - they are regulated, yes, and are supposed to be accurate to a very small percent of total, but they drift over time, or have problems arise, including wear. In one state here, they are expected to be tested twice a year, which still allows plenty of time for errors to start appearing, but in reality they only get to them once every two years! Tons of news reports of pumps seriously over charging customers, like the guy with a 10 gallon tank that was consistently putting in 12 gallons..

Damn it...now i have to bring my 2 gal container down and check my local costco on volume!!

They measure at 5 and 10.. :)

So after about 3.5 months owning a Stinger and nearly 5,000km of driving I’ve finally seen my elusive fuel warning light. It came on last night with DTE showing 35km. I filled it up and my 60L tank took 60.29L so in theory my Stinger should’ve been running on air for those last 35km because the tank should’ve been dry. The GPS screen also warned me my fuel was low and asked if I wanted to search for nearby service station so I hit yes just to have a look at the feature. It’s not bad except it didn’t recognise the service station I was parked in at the time.

What has impressed me though is the fuel economy of the Stinger. Last time I filled the tank it estimated about 580km range. I ran the entire tank on Smart mode (with the exception of the last 10 minutes of my drive last night which I ran on Custom and gave it a fair squirt to try and get my DTE into the 30’s to see if I could trigger the fuel warning light) and by the time the fuel light came on I had done 644.9km at 8.8L/100km well in excess of the original estimate when I filled up. I was getting a bit less than that on my old car and it had a 75L tank so that makes the range on the Stinger more impressive in my books. Generally my economy sits between 8.5-8.8L/100km which is pretty good. I plan to run this new tank entirely on custom (sports transmission & steering & comfort suspension) to see how it compares on fuel economy.

Yes, in the US, i finally saw mine with 18 miles to empty. Far too low in my opinion but i usually fill up with 30-40 remaining so not a huge issue. Would be nice to have it come on earlier in my opinion.

I purposely ran my fuel level down until I saw the light come on. It came on at 19 mile remaining. When I filled up, it took 15.1 gallons. So, I believe I still had close to one gallon in the tank.

I remember when I be first got my SRT8 my gas light came on... Long story short, it ran out of gas a lot faster than my truck.

Living in an area where the temperature swings to the extreme. It is smart to fill up when just under half .....

Last night - “ I need to fill up”
This AM - sitting in traffic and saw 15 MI range and thought strange, no fuel light. Drive down to work and filled up with 4 miles range. No light... my Land Cruiser came on with 70 miles range, Optima around 50 miles, AMG about 75, and nada on the Stinger. Seems like mine would be a “side of the road” reminder you need gas.

It’s not very accurate. Once I had 8 miles left according to calculator but took 15.6 gals ...yikes. Then has 2 miles left and took 15.1. I hate last minute warning in these cars as I have long drive home with no gas stations for 10 miles. Dang light comes on as I have passed all gas stations and I’m on highway where it’s difficult to turn around. I usually just hit eco and baby the car home and back into town next day.

I should have taken a pic, but I just tossed the old fuel pump from my 2003 F150, and if you see how the sensor works, you'd understand (a) why they are not accurate and (b) why you should never risk running out based on their information.

They are very basic floats on a thin, non-rigid wire that connects to a cheap analog sensor (like a volume control on an old radio, for example..)

Movement of the vehicle (and therefore fuel), slight changes in the angle of the vehicle at rest, even random sloshing about when parking, leading to a subtle difference in float height when the fuel settles - all of these things can drastically affect the sensor reading.

If you track your fuel-ups (I use Fuelly) you can easily note what the range reading says, and determine if at least your vehicle tends to show a pattern..

Not this time of year...half tank it gets filled......

My wife's Ford edge says "miles till E" with a digital meter, E isn't on the bottom, it's about at 8th of tank. So once it gets to E, it isn't empty, it has some range left, like E is the light...

Since this thread started, I have checked mine twice. The first time was at 19 miles. Yesterday, it came on at 20 miles. I filled up with 15.1 gallons the first time and 15.2 gallons yesterday. I am getting ~24.5 MPG with my GT2 AWD, on a full tank.

What I did find interesting is that yesterday, when the warning light came on, a list of nearby gas stations came up on the center display. I show the Brand, Address and Distance. It updated in near real time as I was driving.

That should happen every time. Although, I think if you don’t click on’yes’ within a certain time the message disappears.
