Loss of Power

Sounds to me a fueling issue - and with the fuel pump as the prime suspect in this ongoing investigation...
Ok so a brief update: Took it to the dealership on Friday morning and they had a look at it, came back saying the fuel line (or something) was saying high pressure. They were able to confirm that there definitely is something going on with the vehicle, if not what exactly. They asked Kia Canada for ideas, and they were told to take/test a fuel sample, and right now the main suspects are the regulator and fuel pump. Pending the results of the test and whatever else they decide to test/replace, I'm taking it back in at some point next week to get sorted. They're expecting more of an update/course of action from Kia Canada on Monday.

While I was there they did do an ECU upgrade/update.

To recap the timeline, I filled up on Monday 13th, the issue started on Tuesday and persisted through Wednesday. Thursday I drove to work and it didn't come up, but all through Friday and Saturday it was happening more frequently, even under mild acceleration. I filled up again today (premium again, different petrol station), and it happened again except that this time, the check engine light came on, stayed on, and I also got a notification on the touchscreen display.

I'm going to call them again Monday morning and take it in, instead of waiting for them to get back to me.

Waiting for the TSB on this...
What's a TSB, a technical service bulletin? I called them this morning and I'm taking it in a couple of hours.

Stay tuned guys, I had a road trip planned to Minneapolis but that might be out of the window now. At least with the Stinger.

More non-news: Kia Canada advised them to replace the low pressure fuel pump, so now they have that on order. Could be 2 weeks, could be 2 months. In the meantime, They cleared the CEL, but it's probably going to come back. Indeed, the issue happened again, it's much more frequent now. Any attempt at accelerating makes it start stuttering and juddering, but fortunately it hasn't cut power and gone into limp mode because I immediately put cruise control on and let it sort itself out. It seems to be able to moderate fuel flow well enough (if slowly), although it was still struggling with some shift changes so it does seem like it's the fuel pump.

Interestingly, (according to the dealership), Kia Canada said they've seen it before, though it's not very common (dunno how many Stingers are in Canada though). No mention of what the actual issue is, or what they've done to correct it; replacing the pump seems to still be "something to try", as opposed to an actual fix.

I'm going to drive it as little as possible until they call me to take it back in. The unpredictability is very concerning, any time I give it gas it could happen. From moving out of a slip road, to trying to overtake, to moving off a stop. It makes me feel like I'm going get rear ended, especially on the highway.

Ok, a somewhat positive update: I called them on Friday July 8th asking for an update, if they've heard anything, etc etc. They said Kia Canada gave them an ETA of Aug 13th for the low pressure fuel pump. I drove it briefly over the weekend to see how it was behaving, and it was basically undriveable, as soon as the engine warms up it goes into limp mode, and not even cruise control can fix it. That is, I'll set the cruise control on and it won't hold, speed just keeps dropping.

Those first few minutes before it starts acting up are pretty sweet though. Anyway, I called them yesterday (July 12th) saying they can hang on to it until it's sorted (no use having having it if I can't drive it), and they said oh, the part's in (good thing I called eh?). So I took it in, they put the fuel pump in this morning, and called me saying it still has the issue, and this time it's the high pressure fuel pump. They put a test unit in and that seems to resolve it, so they're going to order a high pressure fuel pump and replace that one too. The high pressure fuel pump should only take 7 days to arrive, and in the meantime they're leaving the test unit in so I can drive it.

So in summary, both fuel pumps went bad, and there's no preventative measure I (or they) could take to prevent it happening again in the future when it's out of warranty (of course).

I was planning to drive it into the ground, but I am now seriously mildly considering trading it in for a 2023 Stinger and driving that into the ground instead since the rumours that Kia will discontinue it after MY2023 just won't quit. The main things stopping me are the expense, I'd have to factory order it, and petrol isn't getting any cheaper so I might as well get the EV6 and forget about this combustion engine malarkey.

Unfortunately there isn't any other saloon I'm interested in that has a hatchback and is within the same price range. If they do discontinue it I might give up the hatch and get an Acura but I'd really rather not . If any one has any suggestions for a similar vehicle I would really appreciate it

Its also entirely possible that their first diagnosis, calling the low pressure fuel pump, was a misdiagnosis. And there was nothing wrong with the LPFP.

And the real issue was the High pressure fuel pump the whole time.

Anything is possible, but 2 fuel pumps simultaneously failing is not a likely scenario.

Agreed. Whatever they did to it, it the issue does seem to have gone away although it doesn't quite feel like it used to. Like I'll slow down at a Yield, and then when I give it the juice it just bogs and has a think about it before responding and leaping forward. I've only noticed it a couple of times though, and it might also just be me forgetting what it's like in comfort mode.

THAT just sounds like turbo lag. (hopefully)

I changed my air filter on my intakes because the old ones were getting dirty after I was done I jumped back in the car and drove it when I started driving for like 10 15 min I could here this weird whistle noise then the next day after my car started to loose power and the day after started hearing the blow off valve more then the air going threw my intakes . Anybody know what this can be or why this is happening??

Might help to know if you have stock intakes or aftermarket.

If they're stock, make sure everything is put back together properly and everything is sealed up.
