Let's Talk Tires

Is that rack really just hanging on the pegboard??

Edit - I think I see two screws on the left that hopefully go into something more substantial! lol...
Ha! Yes, 3 inch lag screws into the wall studs. It's not coming down on it's own ... :p

You know what I was thinking, though..

I purchased a nice set of 18" rims from an online supplier, got the TPMS from Ebay, then when everything was in took the lot down to Costco and had a set of Michelin XIce3 rubber installed. Saved close to 700 dollars from what the dealer wanted for exactly the same stuff, have the excellent Costco road hazard warranty, and now I'm all set. Bring on the snow! ... Just not yet ... :)

Although I now deal with a local tire shop (reciprocal business relationship, etc.), I would strongly second the idea of using Costco. Great pricing and unbeatable service when it comes to warranty issues. The best wearing tires I've ever had was a set of Michelins from Costco.

Agree Costco is a good route. Although the Michelin Pilot A/S wore quicker than the anticipated mileage for me on my traded in BMW. I want a set of Conti DWS but Costco doesn't carry them.

You need 3 sets of wheels and tires: winter, summer, and race!

I don't care to compromise in the summer or the winter and I sure don't want to lug around tires and wheels and wait in tire shops. So, proper jack, jack stands, torque wrench, compressor, quality tire gauge, and a tube of anti-seize for me!

I hit a rock in the road that ripped one of my "few week old" tires apart on my Sorento. Costco includes road hazard insurance. Cost to replace? ~$30..

Not to bring up winter tires again... but I was down at our local Kal-Tire today and of course finding winter tires seems to be an issue.

With an 18” rim there are great options - 19” not so much...

My question is this:

I can get a set of Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3’s for the stock rims... which will allow me to get a new set of summer rims, or do I get 18” winter rims and run a Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 that’s studded for the absolute BEST traction possible?

I’ve owned studded tires before and managed to get 4 solid seasons out of them. Absolutely hands down the best tires for winter. But would you guys put studded tires in a Stinger? That means no fooling around in the snow though ha

I have 18” rims......actually a second set of them now. I also have RWD and live where it may snow 10-15” per season or per snow event in western NC. I can’t bring myself to getting full winter tires so I think I’m going to settle on something like Nokian WRG3 or WRG4 as my “all weather” tires and keep the summer tires for the other 9 months. The Nokians can be run year round though so........

Of course none of this may apply to folks much further North where true winter tires would be my choice.

We run the WRG3’s on my wife’s CRV. It’s our 3 vehicle with those tires. So if that tells you anything we’ve had tremendous luck with them.

You will notice a dramatic improvement versus an all season on snow and ice - but they are a bit of a compromise compared to a full winter tire.

sure, why not? if they are legal for road use...as for what to buy, depends on your finances. if you can swing getting a set for winter alone, thats the best route. that way you can pick your own rim design for summer.

I have had my GT2 since February. It has the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires like I imagine most people have.

I have the RWD car, which I bought because it's more fun...and damn the fact that I live in Colorado. Well, those PS4 tires turn to marbles when the road is cold and wet. (I had to commute 20 miles each way when it was 41 F, and raining heavily a couple of months ago...and it was *squirrely*. I had to feather the throttle with a lot of care to keep things from getting away from me. A few weeks later, it was 50+ and raining just as hard, and things were much, much better. Some quick research reveals that this is expected behavior.

So...the plan is to get some winter tires to swap out in spring and fall. Anybody else doing this? Do you have a particular brand/make of tire that you recommend? (These are the 19" wheels, of course). I've been looking at TireRack, but I'd appreciate anyone's advice that is more familiar with this.

Bonus question: Do you have a place that will store and swap your tires from your regular rims, or did you get a second set of rims and tires, and swap the whole set? Drawbacks/advantages to either method?

thanks for any advice.
I live in Utah. Bought my GT1 at the end of March. We had another month of off and on "winter" weather to go. In the middle of April, I set forth (with just over 500 miles on my car) for TX. The weather was atrocious. In Spanish Fork canyon (Hwy 6) the outside temperature was freezing. It was sleeting, not particularly heavily but the roads were very wet and the air was 32F or a bit lower. The roads were still warmed by the springlike days just prior to, so not icing up. Nevertheless, I had Michelin's warning about summer tires in mind as I went through the curves and over Soldier Summit, etc. No problems. I have AWD for a reason! It would have been otherwise with RWD, I reckon. Because of how well AWD handled the situation, I am going to try and make it through this coming winter on my summer tires. I should be okay as long as I am very careful; and as long as I don't have to "plow" through heavy snow. Utah (or at least the Wasatch Front) keeps its highways pretty snow free. It is a rare day when we have any snowpack on our roads. Subdivision streets are a catch as catch can, however. And just getting out might prove that my plan is not doable.

If I change my mind and get a set of winter treads anyway, I'll let you know how that goes.

Unless my wires are crossed, the thread title is 'Let's Talk Tires' in the 'Kia Stinger Talk' subforum?

We put studded Nokian Hakkapelittas on my wife's minivan for this past winter because she wasn't satisfied with the winter traction provided by the WRG3s that we'd had on it for the previous winters. While it pleased her to have the absolute best traction available (happy wife, happy life), I question if it was really the best choice for our Saskatoon climate with most of the travel being highway miles on generally clear asphalt. Not surprisingly, the studded tires were noticeably louder than non-studded tires and I found that the traction wasn't great on dry pavement. The Grand Caravan has a fairly tourqey engine and I found myself often spinning the tires on dry pavement when accelerating from a stop. No arguing that the studded tires are best on ice, but I just haven't found that we encounter those conditions often enough to justify the studded tires over a good set of winter tires.

I'd been having the same internal debate as you regarding studded tires on the Stinger, but I think I'm likely to go with non-studded R3s or X-Ice on 18 inch rims.

I'm sort of leaning the same way as you are. Studs would be incredible, but it seems like a bit of a waste in Saskatoon. The R3's are available in the stock sizes - so if I go that route my wife is ok with me getting new rims for the spring ha!

Is it possible to put 245s on front and 275 on back stock wheels (no clearance issues)?
