Kia Stinger GT has rear wheel drive and a 365 horsepower twin turbo V6

i think the reasoning behind better tunes for the volkswagen golf r and audi s3 are tuner experience. there are so many good turbo tuners out there for vag cars. if the internals are right i don't see why there'd be a lot of trouble getting this car into the 11s with the right tune. perhaps the turbos would need to be upgraded to get there. but there are some really good tunes out there for kia's 2.0 turbo so at least we know people have the formula for this type of setup.

But would you mess with it in the warranty period? I don't think I will be, but you never know, the performance bugs always bite.

Ill probably do a tune, intake and exhaust. All stuff that I can remove if I need to bring the car in for service. Kia parts arent too insanely priced so Im not too worried about repairs as long as its not happening all the time. Id wait on doing any major upgrades like replacing turbos until after the warranty has expired.

That is likely a factor (the VW and Subaru communities have years and years of tuning experience). But sometimes there are platform limitations. The Ford Edge Sport (with the same engine in the Fusion Sport) responses phenomenally to a Stage 1 tune, the Fusoin Sport, good but not great. So even if we start seeing big gains for the G90 3.3T and G80 Sport 3.3T it may or may not translate to the Stinger GT (or vice versa).

The 2.7 - 3.6 liter displacement turbo sixes (both in V and I configurations) from numerous manufactures (BMW, Audi, Ford, MB, Cadillac, etc.) either have factory tunes putting out more power (sometimes with less displacment) than the Kia 3.3T and/or have tunes available that put out very good numbers. So "fingers crossed" this engine will fall right in line.

A stock 3831lb 2016 BMW 340i xDrive with its highly underrated 320/330 power output went 0-60 in 4.1 sec and did the 1/4 mile in 12.7 @ 108.3 mph. So there is lots of potential in the turbo six world.....

That's impressive for the 340i. But I kind of wonder what the RWD does. AWD is great for launching and if you know how to do it you can get some really impressive, out of the ordinary numbers to 60 and the 1/4. But facts are facts and 0-60 in 4.1 seconds is sick for a stock non-M version of the 3-Series.

For me personally I'll have it tuned if there are reliable options available. It seems to aftermarket has a good grasp on what's safe these days and don't do programing too crazy. I'll go the safer route of tunes but I'll definitely have the Stinger GT tuned.

i'm not sure if you're asking me or somebody else. if you're asking me then yes i will be tuning the car as soon as something good and reliable comes along. people are still tuning audis and they have all kinds of crazy technology to see if a car has been tuned or modified. i feel pretty safe and secure about adding some power to the kia stinger.

...was just a general question to all. Tuning options are a blessing. I think it will be fast enough for me in the warranty period (7 years!).

Tuners make up such a tiny percentage of the market. The Stinger GT will be good enough for nearly everyone. Probably like one percent of the people who buy it will tune it or even consider it.

I am not sure what sort of options will be available for the Stinger GT but I am familiar with some of the options for existing Kia's (1.6T / 2.0T):
  • Piggyback units (can be more "warranty" safe [depending on what fuel trims are reached, etc.] but the gains are lower.)
  • OTS/Canned Tunes applied "bench top" or through the ODBII port (More power than piggyback but still not max for risk mitigation. The VAG (VW/Audi)-like detection methods come into play here.)
  • Dyno Tune (Max power or safety for your car. Same warranty issues as with OTS tunes.)
I would like to go the dyno tune route if I can (had that done on my current vehicle). My "weather", my gas, my car, etc.

Without getting into a legal or moral quandary (what you tell your dealer about what you did (or did not do) to your car is between you and your dealer). With that in mind..........

I know of at least one Kia tuning company (there may be others) that will order you a new ECU, program it for your VIN and add a tune. You take out your stock ECU, replace it with the new one and off ya go. You just toss your "stock" (unchanged) ECU on the self. The only evidence anything happened would be that the ECU was "tampered with" i.e. removed and put back in. But that can be minimal and hard to discern.

there's a tune for the 1.6t? jeez, i'd be afraid to tune that motor. it's so tiny. i guess it's not much smaller than the 2.0 but man 1.6 sounds so little. i think volkswagen uses a 1.4 in the new jetta.

who is this vendor that orders a new ecu and programs/tunes it for your vin?

VW also offers a 1.2 in the Polo for ROW. Ford even has a 1.0 Ecoboost 3-cylinder. Both have tuning options.

After my post I took a quick look at several of the Kia/Hyundai tuning companies I was familiar with the from some "cars and coffee" events I had attended. It looks like most of them provide the new ECU service.

Here is one example:

I feel like it's probably time to undo the thumbtack/sticky that this thread has.

That's good news. I like the sounds of that. It's nice having two ECUs so you can just swap when you need to. I wonder how easy it'll be to access under the hood. Hopefully not too complicated so that it's easy to get looking stock without much hassle.

I get the feeling Kia used the Audi A7 as a close bench mark and my thought is the Stinger will do a 0-60 run in 4.7 seconds just like the A7. I think thats where Kia wants to be with this car.

that sounds like a pretty good guess to me. 4.7 would be nice. i'm still keeping my fingers crossed for a miracle 4.6.

Check that out! This rear wheel drive Kia Stinger is powered by a 365 horsepower twin turbo V6 with 376 lb-ft of torque. 0-60 is said to be 5.1 seconds. 8-speed automatic transmission (sorry, no manual). I imagine it's not too difficult to see the Audi influence in the picture above - especially considering their ex-designer, Peter Schreyer, is now employed by Kia. This is a seriously good looking vehicle with a really cool name and surely impressive performance. I think Kia has a tremendous winner on their hands here. What are YOUR thoughts?
