Kia Stinger Depreciation Discussion

I’m on mobile right now, so a pain to search, but someone had previously posted the Kia leasing charts. If they offer a 48 mo. lease term, you can check the residual column for at least their estimate.

Good topic! Here's the lease chart ralzod is talking about. I'm just not sure how to read it. Is it saying after 3 years it'll be worth alittle more then half its value and after 4 years alittle less than half?

Kia is projecting losing almost 50% of the value after 3 years, 36k miles. 2 years, assuming 12k miles a year I would assume it will lose around 38% to 43% could be worse if the 2019 model comes out with all the "missing" features. Even worse than that maybe depending in the G70 price.

That residual column says the GT2 RWD (MSRP 50,100) will be worth 48% in 48 months (53% in 36 months)

That means in 2020, the car will be worth 50,100 * 0.53 = $26,553
In 2021, the car will be worth $50,100 * 0.48 = $24,048

Since Kia is fond of these comparisons:

Porsche Panamara 36 months : MSRP of 88,235, 51% Residual = $44,855 (taken from https://dsrleasing.com/car-listings/porsche-panamera-1119-mo-lease/)

2018 Audi A5 36 months: MSRP of 63,975, 64% residual = $40,944 (https://forums.edmunds.com/discussion/44753/audi/a5/2018-audi-a5-lease-deals-and-prices)

I guess the difference between the Stinger and the others is that they'll still be in the luxury price range after 3 years. The GT2 Stinger will be the price of a base-trim Toyota Camry.

Another way of looking at it is that after 36 months the following will be true.

The KIA will have have lost $23,547 in value.
The Audi $23,031.
The Porche $43,380.

That is still a huge hit for just 2 years. For comparison, my Honda Accord, 2013 ex-l, has lost around $14-$15K in 5.5 years... I'd like the stinger, well, I'd like it even more, if I could get a lighter color interior... But I think I'll wait a year or two longer, cross fingers nothing serious breaks on the accord, and try to find a CPO Stinger with less than 2 years on the road.

Car depreciate. New cars depreciate big time the first three years. That's part of the cost of owning a car. To minimize depreciation, but a three to four year old car. But of course, then you can't own a Stinger :)

I can find one next year, that is one year old, and still save a ton of that depreciation. For comparison, my 2013 accord kbb's out at 14K, meaning its lost $13K in 5.5 years. I'm seeing estimates that the stinger will lose nearly that in one year. It looks cool, but I'm not in a hurry.

That is what KMF is forecasting...doesnt mean what the market will actually show. I dont imagine Honda applies such "optimistic" residual values to its leases either.

I've been cross-shopping a Stinger with a Golf R. The depreciation worries me a lot. For example, taken from a comment on TTAC last year using Carmax prices.

2015 Kia K900 V8 with 25k miles (~60k MSRP): $28,998
2015 Golf R with 26k miles (~40k MSRP): $28,998

That's a helluva difference. If I want to keep the car long-term, it won't matter. If I don't... OOF.

I'll tell you this, last month the average auction value of a 2017 $96,900 MSRP Porsche Panamera was $56,000 with 24,000 in average condition. That is a $40,000 loss in value for 2 years....or about the full price of a brand new GT2 lease price after all incentives. They lost an ENTIRE Stinger in value.......

Yeah any high-end luxury models eat an insane amount of depreciation in the first few years. Enthusiast sports cars, not so much. With all the electronics in modern vehicles, they're going to be a huge pain to own long-term.

Overall I'm sure it's fine. If I buy one, it has a long warranty and I'll likely keep it for 5+ years anyway. By that time, who cares, right?

Would you rather take one stinger today, or two stingers a few years from now?

Some more than others though. See: VW Golf R. BMW M.
True, but those are both special versions of a standard model. The Stinger doesn’t have a GT-S or GT-R version yet, but I’d bet that would hold value better too.;)

I wouldn’t use this lease residual values. Way to early to tell. 2-3 year old Kia Stiinger GT2 AWD on the lot selling for the same price as a new Forte5 EX...I sure hope not.

I'd like my car to last well over ten years. But as already mentioned, electronics will probably make that problematic. Nevertheless, tonight I intend to try and keep this gorgeous machine as long as possible, which means practical.
