No sooner had the sheet been whipped off the 2018 Kia Stinger sedan at the Detroit auto show than speculation began about potential future powertrains beyond the turbocharged 2.0-liter four and 3.3-liter V-6 engines offered at launch.

We already know Kia will offer a diesel engine in the Europe-market Stinger and that there are no plans to bring this version to the United States. Based on our limited experience of the corporate diesel 2.2-liter four-cylinder, this is no great loss. However, it looks as if we will see more powertrain options here, including the possibility of partly and even fully electrified drivetrains.

Spencer Cho, Kia’s overseas product marketing boss, confirmed that despite the Stinger’s longitudinal powertrain layout, it will be able to benefit from the electrification options Kia developed for the transverse-engined Optima sedan. “We can utilize the currently available hybrid, plug-in-hybrid, and EV technology” for the Stinger’s benefit, he said. Yes. I did hear about this. If I'm not mistaken Kia is going after the Tesla Model 3. Very interesting indeed!!

do you think they'll make the electric stinger all about gas savings or will it be something that performs really well? electric cars dont need to be slow.

I think the word "considering" should probably be taken pretty lightly. While they might be considering an electric, I seriously doubt there's any actual plans to speak of.

Yes, it's only "speculation" right now. Kia can only do so much at once! My goodness. :P

It's not really speculation. Members of Kia management have directly stated that it's being "considered", but we need to read between the lines with statements like that. All Kia is really saying is that it's a possibility if the Stinger turns out to be a commercial success as-is.

That makes sense. If the Stinger meets Kias sales goals theyll probably get serious about a hybrid or electric version. If not then why bother? Im sure all the brands are considering electric models of one sort or another. That being said I wonder what Kias sales goal is for the Stinger. I think Ill start a new topic about that.

I'd consider buying/driving a "3 second" all electric Kia Stinger EV. Be 2021 model by then at a guess.

Is that how fast the Tesla P90D is? I would not trust myself with a car that fast. I'd need driving lessons first.

One of the Tesla models (S P100D) does 0-60 in 2.5 sec!! They call it "Ludicrous Mode" and I think it's a purchase for a software upgrade when ordering.

Wow! That's incredible! I hear there's also no sound from the engine so it must be really weird going that fast and hearing nothing at all. One thing I've been wondering about fast electric cars is how many times can you do that before the battery needs to be charged again?
