Atmospheric BOV's are purely for sound in my experience. There aren't any performance or longevity benefits. They are purely ear candy. The factory is a recirculation style which dumps the pressure back into the turbo inlet tract to quiet it down and somewhat assist with turbo spool after the TB is opened back up after the quick shift. Of course the inlet tract isn't sealed so some/most of the pressure is released though the filter/box but in a quiet matter. That's why the aftermarket open element intakes have the BOV sound.

Sorry I forgot to add that most stock BOV/recirc valves don't hold high boost very well. That would be the other benefit to a quality BOV. It would hold increased boost better.
I bought my HKS blow off valves a couple months ago from Khar Tunerz and have them installed now. Since time of install they were great but as of last night they were working as they should but on my way home they stopped working and all I can hear now is the sound from the intakes and nothing from the BOV's. Ideas???
