Finally some good news for the middle class: Mass-market auto brands are almost as good as luxury cars when it comes to lasting quality.

J.D. Power’s annual vehicle dependability study, which measures problems per 100 vehicles for three-year-old cars, found the gap between premium and mass-market brands has narrowed significantly. Mainstream brands now have 143 problems per 100 cars, just seven more than premium models.

“High quality is not the preserve of luxury brands,” Dave Sargent, vice president for global automotive at J.D. Power, said in a phone interview. “Manufacturers are making their mass-market cars more dependable and reliable.”

The narrowing gap between luxury and non-luxury brands comes as premium carmakers stuff their models with more and more technology—add-ons customers love until they act up. In-car tech, like entertainment, Bluetooth and navigation systems, cause the most problems, the study found. Mercedes’s slip, Kia’s gain shows quality not just for the rich

I really love the look of the new Range Rover Velar , and am hoping it breaks out of their QC quaigmir , but I'm not holding my breath .............the Telluride is coming soon , but it's really too big I think ?

I would love an Escalade-sized Kia SUV. If you're going to go big - you might as well be competitive with the biggest in the class...

Oh I agree they need to be as big as the Caddies , Lincolns etc , even the X8 is coming , but so is the mid size Genesis which might work better size wise .............I tow a 20ft boat twice a year the rest is just skiing needs and renovation tools etc

I bought a Suburban mainly cause I needed upto 9 seats and room to put my dog in the back. If Kia came out with a Suburban sized suv...I’d buy it in a heat beat! The Telluride is supposed to be about the size of a Chevy Tahoe and of course the Tahoe is just a smaller Suburban.

My Suburban only has 20k miles and a year old and already had a roof leak...and I don’t have a sunroof. Chevy and quality don’t really go hand-in-hand. The engine is wayyy undersized for the size of the Suburban. So I hope Kia takes that into account for it just torque and towing, but get up and go.

If this is true and the Telluride is about the size of a Tahoe - that would pretty much make it an Escalade-sized vehicle. I'm guessing it'll be a bit smaller. Mainly because I want it to be bigger. :p

If those measurements stay true, then the deciding factor will be towing capacity and I think Kia really need to get that spot on otherwise it will be hard to sell.

I believe , V6 Sorento is rated at 5000 lbs towing capacity , so it should at least that .

Maybe JD Power could survey five year old cars (which would be typical for 60 month financing). Last week, the high pressure fuel pump that feeds the direct injectors (2013 Optima SX-T) took a dump and crippled the car into limp home mode. Car is 5K out of the 60K mileage warranty but fortunately the service manager at local dealer did a above and beyond and covered it. Otherwise parts and labor would have close to $1000 !.
