I think there might be some confusion here between the plastic mirror enclosures that are exposed to the wind and road debris, with the actual rear-facing mirror glass. Not much likelihood of the mirrors themselves chipping ...

Sadly, they do.

Never ever had that issue with any of my cars ..or motorbikes for that. Though once on my ay to V8's at Winton Raceway a bird flew into my air intake on my motorbike

The mirrors don't chip - the plastic mirror housings, which are exposed to high-speed debris, do.

It is confusing to say "mirrors". But I took the meaning to be the cups, not the glass.
