Is the stinger an easy car to work on?

I'm looking at getting a used stinger for my first car. I'm very fortunate that my parents are doing this for me and I already know this. My family has never worked on the cars that we own, but I really want to get into working on mine. How easy are general maintenance like oil changes, and how easy would simple things like a cold air intake/tune be to install?

I'd say it's no more difficult than most cars. The oil filter housing is plastic so you need to be careful when reinstalling a filter. Intake installation will depend on the maker. Some easy. Some (Stillen) a PITA. Tunes are just plugs, so as long as you can follow the directions installation is straight forward. With tunes you'll want to regap your spark plugs or buy new ones. Doing spark plugs can be a PITA too, not because it's difficult but because you have to bend over into the engine bay, which for an old fart like me will leave your back hurting.

There's nothing crazy, like having to remove a body panel to change the oil. It's no Ferrari. With proper instructions and patience anything can be tackled.

Electronics aside, it's not difficult to work on the Stinger compared to most other cars. All modern cars have complicated electronics these days. Some things the dealer has to do because of the expensive and proprietary tools.

I'm thinking about getting the bms dual cone intake when I get it. You don't need to replace as much as others so it seems perfect to me because I'm not really looking for hp gains, mostly just sound. And about the tune, I was only going to go with a jb4 map 1, do I really need to mess with my spark plugs for that?

I'd say it's advisable. However, I did run a JB4 for a couple thousand miles on map 1 with stock plugs with no ill effects. For peace of mind (and you'll eventually crave map 2 anyway) I'd recommend closing the gap on the stock plugs.

I'll have to stop the crave of map 2 lmao. My parents are paying for my car but they sure as hell aren't paying for my gas so I'll be saving as much as possible on that.

So far in the time I’ve had mine for, it’s been very easy to work on. The engine bay actually has more room than most cars.

Howdy and welcome. Totally stock drivetrain, here. Acceleration can still make me a bit dizzy. There's a normal accel, and then sometimes (I think it's biology) the accel seems ramped up. I don't know. But it is fun! :D (just welcoming you; I don't work on my cars)

Not sure if you're looking at a 3.3 or a 2.0, but I can speak for the 3.3. It's not difficult to work on. Oil changes are a little annoying because you have to remove the panel under the car and the oil filter is a little difficult to get back in. Its mounted sideways and its one of those paper filters that goes in a housing and you have very little leverage to push it on. You'll see what I mean if you get one. It's not bad after you figure out a technique. as far as modding, I've done intakes, catback exhaust, lowering springs, catch cans, and a few other things alone in my garage. Overall, pretty easy to work on.

Are you looking at the 4-cyl or 6-cyl? Not that the 6 is hard to work on, but the 4-cyl will be even easier, if only because there's more room in the engine bay to work.

I’ve been running map1 with stock plugs and gap. Running hard and no problems. Logs look good. I bought HKS plugs just in case my stock plugs fail.

6-cyl, I've just been looking for a deal but as soon as I do we're pulling the trigger on it.

Ah, the youngest forum Stinger owner, @burneracchaha. At the other end we have @Legendsk. I see a photo op out of this. :D

I don’t know if a 15 year old should have that much power, especially as a first car. Honestly this is a rare occasion where I would recommend buying the 4cyl. I’m 25 and sometimes I find myself saying “I shouldn’t be allowed to have this” . Not that I do anything crazy or dangerous, but she pulls hard. The car has a lot of power and for a 15 year old mind, it’s going to be very tempting to be very stupid with it. But hey as long as you’re not going to get yourself in trouble, hurt, or killed, or get someone else hurt or killed, enjoy your GT if you get one. It’s a great car.

I'm 15 and I've made $5000 doing photography and another $3000 trading stocks. My parents are in a very good situation financially so they're buying me it. But if you want to waste your time making fun of a 15 year old for getting a car go ahead buddy...
If your paying for the mods and the insurance then I see no problem with owning a stinger. It sure will be easier to pass a driving test with all the safety stuff. Got my GT2 at 21, so you got me beat. But then I also paid for all of it and rebuilt it myself.... Anyways youtube is a good place to get knowledge. Start with easy mods like intake and whatnot and then work your way up. As someone who pretty much has done almost all the mods (except meth and suspension), the stinger is a little easier than a g37x.

OK I will. Have fun installing your intake junior.

Thanks, awesome that you’ve got it at 21! I’ll be honest I’m just very lucky to be able to do photography and have it pay so well. I actually planned to pay for my own car but my parents insisted that they’d do it and to use my money for college instead.
