*disclaimer: first world problems all over this post. You've been warned *

I appreciate people admiring my car because as a car lover there's plenty of vehicles I fawn over. I frequently break my neck to check out passing cars.

But I never go out of my way to engage people in discussions about their car. I believe in giving people their space/minding my business/staying out of people's way/etc.

The stares I get while driving or sitting at traffic lights is easily ignorable, especially since my windows are tinted. But there are normal parts of my life I've had to change to avoid unwanted attention.

For instance my wife has taken the car for the day a time or two. She comes to my job to pick me up and just waits out front. On two occasions I've come outside to a group of people walking circles around the car as she and my kids wait for me. That makes me uncomfortable. She recently took the car so that an insurance adjuster could inspect it at my house. When she came to get me I told her to just park somewhere to avoid the attention. When I came out there was a guy standing at the driver's door putting his hands on the window to try to get a peek inside (he didn't realize someone was in the car). That pissed me off. I understand your curiosity but keep your hands off people's property.

I just stopped at the gas station (a chore I now absolutely hate!). Bubba walks up to me and yells "so how much this thing set you back?!" I politely told him it wasn't too expensive, thinking that would be good enough. No. He pressed on, "so was it 28 thousand?". No, it wasn't. "Was it 32?!" No. (at this point I'm chuckling because I can't believe I'm having to deal with someone asking me about money while I pump gas). "So what we talking man, 40 grand?!?" Yeah man, close enough. He then fist bumps me and says "alright man, all I need to know" and walked off.

This is just a couple of the annoying people I've dealt with in the last couple months. I've started to avoid making eye contact with people when I get in/out of the car because I don't want them to see it as an invitation to hold me up.

Am I being dramatic? Yes, I admit I'm mostly overreacting. But I'm incredibly uncomfortable with strange men staring into my car while my wife/kids are parked in it. And I'm incredibly annoyed when someone questions me about money.

I love the car. I appreciate the attention/curiosity FROM A DISTANCE. But I want to be left alone!!!

Dear Diary: Thank you for letting me vent.

The struggle is real.

I fully realize and accept that I'm being stupid.

I'm just getting so annoyed! I love driving the car. I dread any time I have to actually get out in public.

Dud, you are one of KIA's ambassador now! They might not have bugged you when you got the Optima but this is a whole different level of car from KIA, folks want to know about it from owners instead of going to the dealer. It's something that happens as an early adopter, share the joy man! LOL!

Dramatic yes, but somewhat understandable. I had an idiot cut me off from turning and stop his rust bucket of a van to ask me about it. Most of the time I enjoy the attention but sometimes it's too much.

In all seriousness, that's the side-effect of having a rare car. I personally love it, but someone actually touching the car is a step too far.

I get a lot of engine revs at lights now. It has been a while, like HS since I had engine revs. My wife saw it first hand the other day and just laughed, because she was so surprised that people still did that. I am getting to old....

I also had a VP at my company ask me very loudly across the parking lot if I paid 100k for it. Realize that I work for a contractor based company and most of them have 80k+ trucks but I am the rich one because I am the only one driving a 40k sports sedan.

That's one of the disadvantages to having tinted windows. The other is being treated as a felony traffic stop by police who can't see inside the car to check for weapons. Not my choice, but do what you like and deal with what you have to do.

I can't imagine what people with super/hyper cars go through. Imagine going to the gas station in a Bugatti. My God.

I'm going to have to rethink my post lottery winning fleet.

Exactly. I have no problem with people being curious. It's understandable and I appreciate it. But some people go too far.

LMAO. Yeah, it's my fault that people are allupin my personal bubble and trying to peek into my private property. I should just keep my windows down to accommodate the general public's curiosity.

I don't have mine yet, but thanks for the warning. I know some people enjoy attention from strangers for whatever reason, but I am not one of them. I like to be left alone. I loathe small talk. And walking up to my car and peering inside is a good way to be harmed. I'm getting a Premium anyway (unless I buy a used GT1), so I may not have that issue since the looks are somewhat tamer.

I'm the same way. There's a small group of people I socialize with. I'm a complete recluse when it comes to anyone else.

I am waiting to win the mega so that I can buy a 79 Ford LTD in faded mint green with a green interior. Then the only people I will have to deal with are octagarians who remember having the same car when new.

True, but being that they will think that I am their grandson, someone will buy me ice cream or some cookies and milk, then, I'm good. Talk all you want.

I personally love the attention I now get from random dudes. But in all seriousness, I enjoy telling people it’s a Kia and seeing their stupefied reaction.

To be honest, the "celebrity" of owning a Stinger will fade soon enough, and the next shiny new thing will appear and grab the spotlight. Then, for those who don't want the attention, relative anonymity will return. I couldn't stop looking at the 5th gen Camaro when it first hit the streets...it was like spotting a movie star. That lasted about a year or so, until they became more commonplace. Stingers will never dot every street corner, but the newness of them will undoubtedly fade.

Very true. I remember the first time I saw the new Challenger (2008?) and Camaro (2009?). I nearly broke my neck to check them out. Now they're a penny a donzen.

Hard to say, as my car is on a ship atm. So far I haven't recevied any calls from Sailors I don't know.
