Intentionally Stripping the Chrome Trim

Hello,
I'm sure you all have seen the vertical LED daytime running lights being sold that replace the vertical chrome trim on the left and right side of the gt front bumper. Has anyone tried to intentionally remove the chrome color from those trim pieces using acetone or something similar?

The reason I ask is that I assume it is white plastic underneath the chrome trim, and if that is the case, then one could simply strip the chrome color, then glue a white+amber led strip bought for 5$ on ebay behind rather than spending 250$ for a set that replaces the entire plastic trim piece.

I just installed these this weekend. I doubt the $5 ebay strip is weather proof. And I’m sure it wouldn't come with the custom circuit board to convert power to an appropriate current from the harness to the light that comes with the kits. The kit also came with everything sealed up so all I had to worry about was weather proofing the connections I was making at the harness and between the circuit board and lights

Yeah i'm not looking to make this thread about justifying the 250$ for those prefab pieces, if the ease of installation is what you want to spend your money on that's cool with me. This thread should really focus on stripping the chrome off those trim pieces. I can assure you that they are offered in a weatherproof flexible plastic 'tube' (more of a rectangle really). 12v Led strips are manufactured for pennies, by the time the consumer sees them, there has been 4 or 5 markups. I'm a little lost as to the technical benefit of a custom circuit board. Circuits don't get easier than LED's.

sodium hydroxide soak - cannot say for sure if the plastic of that exact piece is white or not BUT

A few holes had to be drilled into the surrounding plastic air duct pieces for the cleanest wiring route possible and that was all black plastic through and through

Brilliant! Thanks for this, Sodium Hydroxide should work and that also put me on the right internet rabbit hole.
This is what I assume the trim pieces are, thin molded white plastic underneath, electroplated with the dark chrome compound. Stripping the chrome to reveal a partially translucent white plastic that we can tuck the led strip behind.
