Just found this thread. ...I curbed my powder coated stock rims. .....700 initial cost for the 4 and they re-did both right side rims for 300

OUCH!!! In order for my "black campaign" to work, you'd have to sand down all the jagged, hanging metal before using the black touchup paint kit. That is huge damage: I don't know if my method would do the job: I think the damage would still be too visible after the touchup paint kit repair. Hopefully, I'll never have to find out: and any further damage will be small scale, not a quarter of the whole wheel!

I was turning right into a parking lot and this D*CKHEAD that was turning left onto my street cut the corner to close and forced me mid-turn to shoot to the right to avoid hitting him and I curbed my right rear wheel. I can't see straight I'm so pissed. My disdain for people is growing every single day. Can one of those mobile wheel repair companies fix/color match a powder coated wheel and if so what's the going rate?

I doubt it. Powder coat has to be stripped and done fresh. One wheel shouldn't be that expensive.

Yeah that's what I was afraid of. I'll probably just bring it back to the place that originally did them. Should be around 150 and 4-5 days to get it back. Thanks Merlin

That's the same word I got from the Wheel Werks guys. I even asked them if they "repair" hazing/light scratches, and they said, "It's just better to redo the powder coat since labor cost to polish it ends up close to the same."

Before I put my OE "winter" wheels back on, I'm going to use Meguiar's rubbing/polishing compounds on the main areas. I experimented on a small spot and found the difference to be quite dramatic and not that much work.

Mine are powder coated gloss black. The reason is two-fold: I like being able to repair nicks and such easily, and, black looks good too. I keep a matte/flat black and gloss black touchup in my hatch at all times; and the instant I notice any damage, out comes the appropriate paint. All touchup looks good from five-six feet away, which is my benchmark for "good to go".

I live in Alaska and there’s no place to actually repair it. I can get it refinished if I want to do all the wheels, powder coated, or buy a new one for $700.

I do see some cheaper options online, but I’m having a hard time determining whether what I’m pulling up is the correct wheel.

2020 GT2 AWD. 19” staggered wheels. It’s one of the rears.

The part number from the dealership is: J5f40ak270, which looks like this:



But that doesn’t look like my wheel.

Part number 52910-J5260 looks like my wheel.




Am I missing something here? These do look different right?!

That top one is a "refresh" wheel. I think. (it's the same as the Canadian 25 year Kia anniversary wheel) Yours is the standard GT wheel. $700! The price has gone up.

Of course they are different. The second picture is of the 19 inch GT wheel we have in Australia. (Top spec down under) This is the most common wheel on the Stinger. The first picture is of the wheel on a different spec Stinger.

I’m glad I posted. When I gave my dealer the VIN, the first photo’s Part number is what pulled up. Sounds like if I had them order it they would have ordered the wrong wheel.

The correct wheel is $600. But looks like I can get it for $300+$100 shipping online.

I assumed they were different. What was baffling me was that my vin was pulling up the first wheel, which I do not have.

Yep....pissed. Apparently the color of the rim is going to hard to find. Any advice on repairing would be greatly appreciated!

Yea shit happens friend, it is what it is.

You could get it professionally fixed or usually just sand it smooth then get it repsprayed. There is a tiny Dremel sander. If it was a big cut I would say you would need a filler. But that can be sanded smooth.

Story of my curbrash life
One day I was looking for places to eat so I pulled over into a empty parking lot n I wanted to get horizontal in the parking spaces so I was in the road of the parking lot and well I lost track of the curb n I jumped the curb and I hit my brakes. I thought my whole side was f&*%ed lucky my rear wheel just scrapped the curb n front wheel ripped a tire. I just wanted to get off the road to find a place open to eat sigh n it cost me serious curb rash n a tire. I didn't bother fixing the rims as they were toast. I sold the car little bit after before I invested into vossen wheels

Theres got to be a lot sitting spare in peoples garages i know ive got 4 gathering dust. Anyone thats gone aftermarket has probably 4 spare boat anchors. All depends if someone wants to break a set? Probably cheaper to refurb.

For sure. I don’t mind a refurb at all. We just don’t have anywhere up in Alaska that can refurb machined wheels. We do have a good powder coater up her, but I’m not quite ready to completely change them up.

I could ship the wheel down to a refurb place in the lower 48, but $100 shipping each way, plus the refurb, will be as much as a new wheel anyway. Just kinda lame to “dump” a perfectly good wheel outside of the cosmetic damage. It’ll drive me nuts though if I don’t do something about it. I’m a weekend warrior detailer, have already been a bunch of hours in making it look great.

I’ve seen quite a few sets for sale, but understandably, no one wants to part out.

I "learned my lesson" a bunch of times. Heh. Different scenarios resulted in yet one more curb rash episode. I have assumed the title "Curb Rash King". Even when I am not driving I get rashed rims. How is that possible? WAS possible; won't happen again, after the last time: car wash tunnels, any and all, are anathema. The next time I visit a car wash place it will be Lux Auto Spa to avail myself of their lift and hand sprayed undercarriage service (I was only using car wash tunnels to get the undercarriage spray). All other washing is done by me.

Vis-a-vis "making it look great": you're probably already doing what I did and more. I resorted to heavy grit sandpaper, then "mid grit" and finished up with wet 2000 grit; lots of water. I did this a bunch of times for separate "occasions". Heh! And finally, one trip through the car wash tunnel in the winter rashed my two left rims all the way around. That was the final straw: I got them powder coated.
