Another 1st world problem is the huge uptick in insurance rate. I'm coming fron subaru legacy to stinger and the rate went up $1000 usd for the yr.

I was not expecting that.

I got the sticker shock with my Optima, too. I came out of an Acura TLX that had a higher MSRP, and the insurance for the Kia was hundreds more.

The explanation was that Kia parts are higher and it costs more to repair them. When my first Optima was wrecked, I found out Kia sells parts in "groups", meaning that if you need part "A" you have to buy the whole surrounding assembly because they don't break them down. For instance, I needed a floor pan for the trunk, and they had to buy the whole assembly from the bumper to the back seats and up both sides of the trunk. Chevy or Ford would sell just the pan, but not Kia.

Interesting. I came out of a 2016 Ford Fiesta ST and we laughed at the tiny increase in our insurance.

Interesting...ours is only up $24/mo from our 05 Accord. When we were still looking, we checked out a cpo 16 Mazda6 GT and it was $27/mo MORE than our Stinger!

Which stinger do you have? I am wondering if you have all the drive wise stuff or not. That really makes a big difference in what you'll pay for insurance. I just bought a new Jeep compass for my kid with all the extra saftey stuff.( 35k msrp) It is quite a bit cheaper to insure than my 13 optima with none of the new saftey stuff.

Good point, @Chris. Not all Stingers come with the DriveWise goodies in them, so be sure to tell your insurance company that you bought all the "safety" stuff, automatic braking and all that and see if it makes a difference in the rates. Probably depends on the company.

Hmm.. I use State Farm and have been with them forever. We went from a Mazda Speed6 to a fully loaded Stinger GT2. The cost went up about $300 a year, to just over $800 a year (Full coverage). I don't think that is bad at all considering all the discounts we were getting on the Mazda for how long we had it and have no accidents blah blah blah..

I have a GT2 AWD. So I would think I have all the safety features any everything. I have allstate. I wonder if I should look at other options. my rate went from 650ish for 6 months on legacy to 1100+ for stinger..

Ya $500 is ok but when you get to $1000 its a lot.

One thing I learned about the insurance industry, you have to shop around every few years. They, like cell phone companies don't offer you much in discounts after you have been with them for a while. One company raised my rates for an "accident" where someone backed into my parked car and damaged the front bumper, I got the plates from the car and called my insurance to see if they could help me get info on the vehicle. They did and all the repairs were handled by the other persons insurance company, at renewal time, my rate went up for an accident claim. I questioned it as they paid out nothing to me so how are they raising my rates, they stuck to their argument. I had been with them for years but I shopped around and got a much better rate than what I was paying them for their "discounts", when they were saying was the best in the industry. Now, I don't take their word, I shop around.

Unless you have a horrible driving record you are overpaying a lot. I don't pay 1100 for 6 months on 2 cars with full coverage with really high limits and a 16 year old driver on the policy.

Lots of variables including the age of the driver(s), part of the country where you live, annual miles driven, ticket and driving history, other coverages for other insurance with the same company, the amount of your deductible, and sometimes the phase of the moon when you applied. But be careful because if you do need to use the insurance, not all companies are alike. Many insist on using "will-fit" parts and not factory parts for repairs, or their service is slow and inefficient. You usually (not always) get what you pay for.

Mine originally went up too; my previous, Genesis coupe ultimate, was ~650 every six months and it went up to ~800 for the GT. I switched over from Geico to Progressive and it dropped to less than 700, and that's with even more coverage.

I had a KIA optima and went to the Stinger Gt2 and my insurance only went up 100.00 bucks. I have American family. They said it is listed as one of the safest cars on the road. There are a ton of air bags in this car. I think I would feel like I was surrounded by marshmallows if my air bags deployed.

thank you. I will call them.

I'm 48, clean record, no accidents, multicar and homeowner's discounts through Farmers. Been with the same agent for 20 years. I highly recommend Farmers...any time I've had an issue like an accident or a comp claim, they are on the ball and get things done quickly and fairly.

Mine is a GT2 AWD. My rate was actually about the same between the Stinger and my '13 Optima SXL that it replaced. My overall monthly payment went down by around $10 because when I added the Stinger it changed something with my wife's '15 Volvo.

The part of the country you live in can be a big factor that many folks overlook.

Mines decent on a 16 Genesis 3.8 Like 280 each quarter (no safety features). I'm hoping a stinger wouldn't bump it up to much. This is a good discussion though guys

Drive Wise doesn't matter per what I have been told by insurance companies. It's about the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash test ratings and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration safety ratings which the Stinger doesn't have yet. Another thing insurance looks at is your credit rating.

Also in order to have an accident free rating you have to have no accidents, not meaning your fault, literally meaning any accident period. And it's reported to the same system that shows other insurance companies. Someone rear-ended me and 100% their fault but when I contacted Progressive to switch insurance they stated I didn't qualify for accident free discount because of the rear-ender. It didn't matter if I have not had a fault accident for the past 30+ years, it was all about just being in an accident.

Furthermore any quote Progressive lists that seems too good is more than is too good to be true. Read the fine print and you will see it states the some discounts will go away after the first 6months. Don't get me started on the BS plugin or app to track your driving for 6 months to get that discount. Good luck on that, as it measures not only how fast you are going but how soon you brake along with how long you drive in a day. So if you want to go driving for more than 2hrs be it travel to/from work and them some or just for the hell of it, you better wait until the 6 months is over.

I would love to hear what others pay or how insurance works in other countries, so far its just been US.
