Help guys! Won’t start. Battery seems fine and I can even turn the wheel and move it out of park, but the brake pedal is down about half way and does release all way. I can still press it some, but it doesn’t release all the way. Parking brake is not on. Everything seems normal when I go to start except the brake pedal. It goes through a “system check” with no problem. Any ideas???!!!

Was able to get it into Neutral and it started. Now in Park, it starts normally. If anyone has ideas as to why it wouldn’t start in Park and I had to start it from Neutral, please comment.

There is a switch that tells the system what gear you're in. The name escapes me at the moment, but I know there is a SA on Optima's
about it and they replaced mine (even though I wasn't having any problems). Maybe yours was slightly out of alignment with the switch, or the switch is bad (?)

Edit - Sometimes called a Neutral Safety Switch, but on my Optima they called it something else. Keeps you from starting the car in gear.

Edit #2 - Kia calls it an Inhibitor Switch. Kind of like a gear position switch.

Not saying that's it, but it's an idea to pursue.

+1. Sounds like a neutral safety switch problem. Or, could have been that gear selector wasn't fully seated into park before hand. Not unheard of. Had that with my Mercedes. It's like slightly out of whack.

Thanks! Yeah, it keeps happening so I’ll take it in. Only 1,400 miles...hoping this isn’t a trend!

Mine has been at the dealership for a week and they still can't figure out why it won't start though everything else seems normal. They have verified/checked: battery, internal antenas, checked both fobs, reprogrammed both fobs, fuses, starter, fuel pump, has almost full tank, netruel safety switch, etc. They are now pulling open the insides to check wiring. They are in contact with Kia Tech Support with case # going step by step to find a solution. I am now 3hrs away from where I left her in Lubbock for Wichita Falls for next work project in rental Kia provided.

Day 16: still havent solved the issue and still at the dealership. This morning when I checked for update KIA Tech had them order a new PCM to replace and see if that solves it.

has anyone resolved this problem

I would like to know as well, mines at the dealer for the same thing. Although mine has been sporadic. First time it happened was in my driveway. Second time I was on the freeway during rush hour and auto stop/start kicked in and wouldn’t start up again. I was stuck in the lane for an hour until the tow truck came. It’s been at the dealer for 2 days now. They said if it doesn’t do it by the end of tomorrow, they will have to release the car. My car only has 650miles on the clock.

Pure hell, @Generic1. I hope they can duplicate it. Nothing worse than intermittent failures. Failure needs to be one hundred percent reliable (I know what I did there) or it is just like being cursed.

It’s been at the dealers for 3 weeks now and they can’t figure it out. This is not the experience I was hoping for when buying a new car.

So the dealer said to come pick up the car because it has been in their possession for over 3 weeks and they couldn’t recreate the problem. So I get there took the keys and started my inspection of the car and noted that there was a gash on the left rear tire and went back inside and informed the service manager. Low and behold I get the no we didn’t do it speech. I reminded him the the car is barely over two months old and was fine when it went in, he really couldn’t say anything but I will order you a tire. So i go to leave and boom car won’t start, so I run back in and they are all staring at me like I’m nuts. They had it all that time and it happens when I pick it up. I’m just glad it was there and not on the highway again.

That would truly be a nightmare, so what happened after that, did the car start eventually, or did you leave it there again ?

Was the Service Manager able to see it not starting?

Had to leave there so they can try to figure it out.

He was not around so the service advisor had a tech come out and scan the car. It pulled up at least 8 codes. He said it was loosing connection to the ecm and bcm.

I have an image in mind of your car sitting there unexamined for virtually the entire three weeks. Then they get around to it eventually: it starts: they call and tell you to come pick it up. Sorry.:(:cautious:

I went in for first oil & filter Monday. While there visiting with another customer. He was there because they have had his car (sure happy to learn it isn't a Stinger), for 5 months. The state inspection sticker has expired and the state is after him to prove he doesn't still have the car or pay a fine for not getting a current sticker. The dealer's gonna put on a current one for him and apologize to the state and beg forgiveness.

On a side note, the cops came while I was there. Some lady with a 2005 something, brought it in. It needed a new ECM, but they are no longer available, AT ALL. So the service manager explained, much as he would like to sell her one and the labor to install it, he can't. She told him she would sue him if he didn't fix it. He told her that made it out of his hands. If she would sign this paper stating the dealer couldn't repair it because parts were no longer available, and she understood it wasn't fixed, then she could have her car. She refused to sign and called the cops for the dealer stealing her car. Cops went away shaking their heads. Asked the SM if he gets the police called a lot? He groaned and said, Rarely, but it's been one of those days. . . . Pretty entertaining day at the dealer.
