Got my sunroof frame replaced , the noises have gone ...............so far !

its been perfect since it was replaced , I cant believe the difference , it tightened up the structural integrity of the whole cabin , and 17yr old son proved to me how much better the stereo sounds too !!
So what do you think is going on with this flaw? I'm going to guess that assembly had a "glitch" phase (or possibly more than one), wherein the entire sunroof assembly was compromised somehow. It can't be insertion into the roof line, or else the new sunroof would not have been necessary: Kia would have simply uninstalled the existing sunroof frame and reinstalled it correctly. So the noises must be caused by a "loose" assembly of some kind. Possibly the sunroof assembly plant or station went through a retool when the problem was caught. Replacement sunroofs are all made to the tighter/retooled specs. (How would we ever find out or know? Only when Kia did not catch a flaw like this soon enough to prevent thousands of Stingers from going out with the faulty sunroof assembly; I think it is encouraging that so far there have been very few "recalls" of any kind.)

(edit to ask: what is the build date of your car?)

Yeah. I'm always proposing to newbies that car info in their sig is a good/useful thing.

What are your impressions about what the cause is? Your build is early, right when I would be expecting the Stinger assembly line to be catching things shortly after they tooled up.

..............to answer your question , I dont know , clearly they missed a proper install of the frame or it was damaged to start with . The glass is the same , they peeled it off first to replace the frame , I wish I had seen the OEM frame but they shipped it back to Korea asap .......................the car is "toight like a Tiger" now !!

"Proper install" would only require the same, original frame put in "correctly". A damaged frame is possible; and if Kia asked for yours asap, that could mean there wasn't any "batch" of cars that got out with a bad sunroof assembly. It would be interesting to know what the dealer or Kia inspectors saw that made them decide to fetch a brand new one.

I made my CASE to both the dealer and Kia Canada , and they decided the fix was to replace it..............squeaky wheel !!

Don't think it's batches at all. Mine is a 2019 with a 10/18 build date and the roof/sunroof creaks and squeaks like mad. Even after I did the best I could applying gummi pflege to the seals. So it kinda just seems like luck of the draw. And I don't remember the base GT model that I test drove having the same issue. I want to say that car sounded pretty solid. I'll wait though at least til I get a damn license plate on the car to take it to a dealer.

It couldn't have the "same issue", since the base GT has no sunroof. :p

Luck of the draw means what, I wonder? There is something intermittent going on here, in the production process: some sunroof frames are crap, others are perfect. What is it?

I'm waiting on my replacement frame - glad to see it's fixed the issue thus far.

Dealership lined up my doors and within the next few days the stores started creaking again.

Reviving this one...did you have the frame replaced and did it work out positively?

Just had my 20k oil change completed on Friday 14JUN19, and they called Kia themselves to get an answer about what to do with my rattling sunroof. They heard it pulling the car up to the shop for the oil change, and you can make it stop by pushing on the sunroof with your hand. No amount of 'tightening' the sunroof would correct or improve the issue.

Currently waiting for the dealer to hear back from Kia, as they didn't want to touch it more than that without talking to Kia first.....

I am running into similar issues. Seems to be at it's worst when the car is cold, but calms down as it warms up. My next trip to the dealer I will be bringing this up. It seems to have gotten progressively worse as time has gone by.

Took a road trip last week and I noticed it. Seems to only happen when driving slow, parking lot speeds.

My dealership refuses to fix the issue. How do I escalate this? I have the premium hotline number, which I will pursue, otherwise I don't know what to do. I'll try to gather recording of it as well. It's just intermittent enough that it's not always there to test. It's always present above 65+mph however. They heard that and they claim they can't fix it.

this issue is so inconsistent. While there are some that say the noise is more prevalent when it's cold, my "loud" days are when it's warm or has been sitting in the sun for a few hours. It was about 45 degrees on my way to work this morning and quiet, even over bumps. Over the weekend, it was about 75 degrees and sitting in the sun for a few hours before I drove it, and it was creaking at the slightest bump or road imperfection. Later that evening, cooled down to about 54, and very little creaking.

Same issue. It's so intermittent that it's a real pain to know when it'll be a good day or bad day.

@Duox For me, I pretty much know now when it will be creaking. Lengthy sun exposure and 70+ degrees...I really love this car, but this kind of thing irks the heck out of me. BUT, for a $40k GT1, I have had no mechanical issues so that counts for a lot....

Mine only happened at slow/parking lot speeds. Dealer did a fix that involved removing the glass and reinstalling, and it seems to work, but I think I heard it a little the other day, so we'll see if it stays that way.

I don't know exactly what they did, but the dealer sounded like he knew exactly what I was talking about.

My dealership refused to look at my squeaky sunroof as I had put on an aftermarket dash cam. They also refused to look at the trunk thunk over bumps because the dash cam is a dual channel with a forward and reverse facing dashcam. Looks like i'm going to have to live with it or fix it myself.
