Based on minimum required, I changed to 87 octane. I really haven't noticed any difference in power, I hit the gas and I am at 100 before I know it.. good enough for me :)

Our seat of the pants opinions don't answer the question of whether the rated power is available at 87 octane. Of course the car will still be quicker than most other vehicles on the road (and satisfactory) even if it had a 10% power and torque chop.

How can we find out the real answer?

Just guessing here and my opinion is essentially worth nothing because I don't know and I don't even have my car yet.

First, the 0-60 times of the 3.3T are conservative based on the measured results of professional reviewers with sophisticated equipment (C&D, MotorTrend, Road & Track, MotorWeek, etc.) All of them got from 4.4 (C&D) to 4.6. So I would guess that the 4.7 sec. times advertised must be for the recommended fuel octane (87 in the U.S. rating system) and for both (or the lesser of) the RWD and AWD and with either 18" or 19" tires. I don't think the Kia lawyers would allow them to fudge on those numbers if the recommended octane and either tire/driveline set couldn't meet the advertised specs. In other words, I would think the RWD without LSD and with 18" tires should be able to make 4.7 sec. and the others better than that. JMHO.

I'm sure both the power and mileage differences between 87 and 91 are marginal but measurable. To measure the power you'd really have to dyno it at 91 then use the same dyno at 87, and I don't imagine most people would bother going to that kind of trouble and expense. On the other hand it should be pretty easy to calculate the mpg difference once someone tries it out.

93 octane where are you people at , if I said your gas can can you fill it up and mail it back? We can only get 91 in California. Turbo = supreme , in my book . Performance and fuel mileage + . Just got rid of our 2015 genesis 3.8 running premium in California on a road trip about the best we could do was 28 MPG. Took a trip this summer up to Oregon and Washington where they had 92 octane and averaged between two and 4 miles to the gallon more . 93 octane where are you I'll move. Have a great day.

93
I have not tried lesser fuel though.

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
I am 99% sure Korean uses Ron ratings which is different than the American aki rating 93 Ron is about 89 Aki.
Indeed it is RON ratings, same as Europe.
The fuel I use is 96 RON,
I thought it would be equivalent to 93 in the US.

96 Ron is 91.6 Aki.

Intresting posts......thanks

Manufacturer will simply say whether the stated HP and torque numbers are achieved with 87 octane or something else. None of us have to do anything.

I think it's reasonable to assume that the stated hp and torque numbers are on premium fuel and we can expect a slight drop going to regular. Do they need to specify somewhere that the reason they recommend premium is because that's what it takes to achieve those numbers?

If you read the thread, there are different indications of what is required or recommended. We're not stupid, but there should be an official statement or documentation about this. Pretty basic, but many manufacturers like to leave it vague...for various reasons.

Actually that crap is horrible for you car. It's additives that make the gas behave as it has a higher octane level. They are not clean burning at all, and some of them can do real damage. You can't just add octane.

It's not horrible at all. It's used in everyday pump gas to raise octane.

Octane booster contains Methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl or MMT for short.
It is a compound that can be found in your pump gas and is used to boost the octane rating.

Directions:

  • Step 1: Fill tank with at least 16 gallons of gasoline
  • Step 2: Add one bottle of NOS Octane Booster
  • Step 3: GO FAST!

I use 93. I'll take the cleaner burn and more power for a few dollars extra per fill-up. You'd also probably get a little better mileage.

Most manufacturers don't recommend using octane boosters unless you need something that normal stations can't provide. If the car is recommended to run on 93, using an octane booster is nearly pointless.

In California they only get 91, my reply was to a Californian.

Fact is: The more octane you run the further the PCM can advance the ignition timing which creates more horsepower.
Adding octane booster to 93 gas will provide MORE horsepower.
The exception is on engines that do not use electronic timing control and only use a base timing map.
All Stingers use ESC and will make more horsepower with a booster added to 93 octane gas.

Not all of them use MMT.
