Flat Credit Card Fob

I'm sure I'm dreaming here, but does anyone know of a way to use a credit card (flat) type of key fob for the Stinger? Obviously, it would be without the remote buttons, but locks and engine start would all be available. I've seen that there are some similar features on newer Hyundais (different tech), but this has to be possible right?

Yep! That would be ideal to have something that slim. My understanding is that uses different tech, and wouldn’t work with a Stinger.

Probably wouldn't be as convenient as you think. With Tesla's card, for example you have to touch it to a certain spot on the center console to turn the car on. You have to touch it on a certain spot to unlock the doors. I NEVER use my key card. I only bring it with me just in case the phone key goes kaput.

Yeah. I was hoping for the same functionality as the standard Stinger Fob… just no buttons. Ability to unlock doors with the door handles when near the car, and the ability to start the car.

Lessening the bulk in my pockets by moving that card/fob to my wallet would be nice.

I was pndering tearing apart a standard fob and 3D printing a flatter card for it, but wasn’t sure if something like that already existed.

Those use NFC, like the tap chip in your credit card. There's no room for a battery. They have to be within a few inches of the transceiver to get enough energy to activate, hence why you have to actually touch them to the thing.

You could make a holder that's a little smaller. Our fobs use coin cells, so you could get down to about half the width, maybe a bit less, but the length and height would be about the same. The circuit board takes up most of the room available. It's surprisingly tough to pop the shell halves apart, but that's it - they just snap apart. I found myself with a dead key in a shopping center last month and had to figure it out "in real time"

there was a slightly thicker card for the older genesis G80 model that had the battery in it so you could just dump it in your wallet. but as far as cards are concerned it's a bit of a chunker. It might work with our car if it's the right frequency.

update: yes, both the round lock button stinger key and the genesis key card are on the same 433.92MHz frequency. Can't guarantee it, but at least that's a good sign. you'll still have to get it programmed.

If that works it would be a good solution for going out, definitely less to carry. That plus a couple of credit cards makes for a slim wallet.

yes. What I don't know is if the '22 key with the remote start is the same frequency as the older stingers and this key card. If someone with a '22 can open the key and give us the FCC ID in there, I can google the frequency it uses. I doubt they changed frequencies, but it's still worth checking since it doesn't cost anything to do so.

Any idea of the thickness of this genesis card? I'm currently printing version one of the DIY holder for the Stinger fob internals. A bit less than 5mm. The fob internals pop right out and make it pretty easy.

I have a 2018 Genesis G80 and have the credit card key. I leave it in my wallet and push the button on the door to lock and unlock and use the app to remote start the car. Here are the measurements you asked for. Measurements are in mm.

Yeah... It's thicker than I expected but still fits in the wallet pretty good. I didn't want two fobs (wife's Denali) and my Genesis. Get in and out like you have the fob.. instead of pushing lock/unlock on the remote.. I just push the button on the door handle.

FYI... that card sounds much better than the DIY of just dropping the fob internals into a 3d printed card. The internals of the FOB are almost 7mm on their own... the battery is thick. If you're handy with soldering electronics, you could go shorter, but it's looking pretty chunky.

you could probably use something like a flipper zero to reprogram the card to any frequency you want. all you would need is an original key and the F0 could grab the frequency straight from that, then it may be able to write to the chip thats in the card. once that happens, the card would act just like a car key.

when I got a new key programmed to my G80, I had a locksmith do it. Didn't even have to go to the dealer. However, make sure only one key is in the car at a time during the programming. don't just pile them all in the cupholder.

Yeah.. I took both fobs and the card to the dealership and they programmed it for free. Glassman Genesis Southfield Michigan
