FAQ: Vibration under braking: warped rotors? NO!

That's a tough combo since there is no engine braking ever.
Is "engine braking" something different from using the trans to slow down? Because the trans definitely slows this car down.

Thanks for that detailed recommendation! I've saved this post to my Stinger Favorites! :D:thumbup: Sooner or later, I'm going to want it.

@KNSBrakes

THANK YOU for your well written and knowledgeable post.

I think that this may be viewed differently based on your point of reference. I also feel that there is very little engine braking with the Stinger relative to previous cars I have owned. In the search for better fuel mileage and engine responsiveness, many manufacturers have reduced the mass of their flywheels which should improve engine braking. I am not sure if the Stinger flywheel is considered light or heavy by "gear heads." Maybe some will weigh in on this... The increase in engine braking from a lighter flywheel may be offset in our cars due to the low(er) compression of our turbo engines. But I don't feel that 10:1 is terribly low given a common range 8-12. Given this, I suspect that there are some engine management fuel conservation things going on (i.e. "rev hang") with the Stinger that limit the engine braking. Downshifts in my GT result in a rise in rpms with no appreciable (usable) braking effect.

My experience is about the same as @Helo58
Unless you are gearing way down to very high RPMS - the rev matched downshift hardly causes any deceleration at all.

I already bought the front pads a while back hoping to grab the rear pads when they came available. I guess they were really popular for the rears because they are on back order until some time in 2020. The shuddering is starting to come back too.

What front pads did you buy?

KNSBrakes...the Ferodo site doesn't have an application for Kia, do you have part number for front and rear Ferodo pads for the Stinger?

"After you finish, DO NOT TOUCH THE BRAKES UNLESS YOU HAVE NO CHOICE. You can either drive around for 10-20 minutes without touching the brakes to give them time to cool, or immediately park the car, turn it off"

warning: You should never drive a turbo car spiritly and then turn it off immediately.

So I am at 15k miles and had my oil change done at the dealership. They told me they took the car out for a test drive and noticed when applying the brakes at 50mph there is a shudder and they want me to set up service to check it out. They said it feels like warped rotors, it is probably under warranty, and I should get it checked. I did notice a little shake but have done the braking to remove the deposits on the rotors. Now that they documented it in their files, now what. As a side note, I keep my passenger seat at a certain position and noticed it was extended the whole way back. I guess it takes two now to do a test drive to make sure everything is ok.

I am at 17000 miles on my stinger. The dealership just told me that my rotors are warped. And I need to pay $400 to get them resurfaced. They said it is outside of the 12000 mile warranty.

Trying to find the kia premium service phone number Found 1 on the site but it is not correct.

Consider yourself lucky. I am at 17500 miles and on my 3rd set of rotors. There is always a silver lining...

You're quite a ways outside of the warranty period. They gave me a hard time at 13k miles. The premium line might not be much help to you (if they even still exist).

1-855-454-2847 (to make it easier to remember its 855-4KIAVIP)

I recommend changing the pads before you bring the car in and then bedding them to the new rotors once Kia resurfaces/replaces the rotors. Good luck.

Does this number still reach "premium service"? 855.542.7733

I've successfully argued the point that the warranty doesn't cover wear items however, the car's braking system as a whole is warrantied and new rotors are warranted due to the braking system ruining the brake rotors. A failure of the braking system to function properly that results in damage to other components is grounds to have those other components replaced even if they are wear items within their serviceable life (i.e. proper thickness). Be persistent, the worst they can say is no.

Well, because of everyone here saying to ask and what to say, I did that and they are covering it. The dealer contacted Kia on my behalf. They are resurfacing the rotors as a courtesy warranty. Thanks everyone for the tips.

Just wondering, maybe stupid question so forgive me. Did you try cleaning the rotors by sudden almost stopping from 60-70 MPH (done 2 or 3 times and then drive for a while so the rotors cool off before stopping) as recommended in previous posts? If so I take it that didn't work for you??

I only have 4000 miles on my Stinger, but with all the reports of rotor problems I'm watching these posts and trying to learn what to do if I have the problem.

Thank you

Good question. I actually did try that method when I first started to feel the shudder but was unsuccessful. I tried it several times and I could not get it to go away. I am going to try using that method every 1000 miles and see if that prevents it. My previous car was a charger rt awd and i did not need to have the rotors turned down on it until around 75k miles. I was in much more stop and go traffic with mountains. My driving habits have mellowed even more so I do not think it is from spirited driving.

There is no need to "prevent it."

If the vibration appears, then you do it. I've had to about 4-5 times now and it works perfectly. I live a couple of miles from an interstate and can quickly and easily do a quick 100-30 taking the off-ramp, then cruise home.

There's nothing wrong with the rotors on this car. They're hunks of iron like most others. The pads, however, leave much to be desired in terms of deposits (they stop just fine and don't fade when pushed).
