Exhaust Tips

Finally had a chance this afternoon to install chrome exhaust tips on my MBRP exhaust from Aliexpress. Did it to remove drone that was bothering the kiddos while sitting in back.
In the second pic I have the new exhaust tips on the right and OEM on the left... Not much of a difference which I wanted. Painted the inside to prevent rust as well. Forth pic shows how much I offset for inner and outer exhaust tips.
Took it for a drive on the highway and it might have eliminated the drone in the 1750 RPM range but honestly now its too quiet for me

Those look like the same tips I ordered from Aliexpress while waiting for my GT-9 exhaust to arrive. Why paint (except for appearance) because they are supposed to be stainless steel?

Tracking with them being stainless... Do not want any rust forming. I had a bad experience with "stainless" exhaust tips on my truck. They rusted out and looked hideous.
I do think it enhanced the look inside :)

Did you order the ones posted a couple pages back in this thread?

Nice! I've got the same tips sittin' in boxes. Just need time to put em on.

With the MBRP already installed did you have to remove the mufflers to get the stock "tips" off?

Super easy to install.
Removed exhaust from the hangers in back and middle. No need to loosen any of the hardware on the exhaust itself and was able to do one side at a time.(Used WD40 for the middle rubber/hanger piece)
Then remove the OEM tips with a 10mm socket and Philips screwdriver.

Nice! Thanks so much. So with the hangers off you just kinda wiggled each side out of the way to pull the old faux tips off one at a time?

Yes, then hang the exhaust back on. Installed the tips from outside the bumper. No trimming needed.

Doooope! Thanks so much man!

And off topic, I saw you were mulling sway bars/springs in another thread. I gotta say HUUUUUGE thumbs up for the eibach front & rear swaybars with stock springs. I adore how little this car scrapes and the sway bars really made the car feel so much more planted. And the rear end comes out much more predictably. Before it was kinda squirly. Highly recommend. PM me if you have any other questions.

Welp, I'm off to buy some ramps!

are there any quality black tips that go with MBRP exhaust ? i saw the post from the guy that sanded the stainless steel and painted but that seems like way too much work for me.

As a note for all, had the tips on for about 1-1.5 months and have started experiencing melting on a few mountain runs. Left side of the lower bumper piece is melting pretty bad (the actual muffler is shifting during driving and pushing its 400-500 degree (Celsius) heat onto the plastic). It does not look bad /noticeable from behind, unless you get in and move the pipes slightly. Worked with the mechanic to try and fix the sway but to no avail. Potentially might weld one piece of the pipe to the frame to stop it from moving and melting further. Going to get the lower bumper area from a wreckers and install as a replacement to the melting (Not a big deal for me, might just do it when/if I sell the car or gets worse).

Sucks to hear that your car is schmelting. Sorry I recently watched Austin Powers. Thanks for the update man.

Can someone help me out with figuring out what dimension tips I'm supposed to get? I have a Megan Racing Exhaust and on their website they say that the inlet diameter is 63mm and the tip diameter is 58mm.

Read my post on this thread - #817. Looks like you got the right size selected but you can choose different finishes as well.

got the Alkrapovic knock-off tips from AliExpress. Installed today on the Borla S-Type, and as someone mentioned, it's almost too quiet now, LOL. Nah it's good. Much more comfortable when cruising and still plenty of sound when pushing it. Kind of the best of both worlds now. Not bad for $175 including shipping. Wish I could have afforded the Borla tips!

I wish I had the same results. Installed the same tips on my Borla and it didn’t reduce the sound in the cabin. Did you do any hatch sound deadening, resonator on the exhaust or anything else?

I did do the dynamat in the hatch area. pulled out all the interior bits in the trunk including the sides, and covered probably 90% of the bottom area and 50% of the sides and that did help some, but didn't really do much for the drone at low RPM's when cruising This was all done a couple weeks ago, and if I didn't know I did it, I probably wouldn't even have noticed the change. Although, I do think it helps with just road, wind and tire noise.

No other exhaust mods. I feel like the tips put all the noise behind the car, not under it.

The tips probably cut that low tone drone down by say 70%. it's not totally gone but it's no longer an issue or uncomfortable. That sucks that it didn't do as much for you. Maybe we hear a little differently. I almost always drive in sport mode, so I avoid going into 8th gear, and I do very little highway cruising. i'll get her out on the highway soon, in comfort mode, and see what it's doing.

I think doing the sound deadening under the back seats is really important to improve sound quality
