Eco Mode Question

Help me understand this eco mode. I drive mostly in the city and get 14 mpg with premium unleaded gas.
Here is the thing. In eco mode it goes threw 5 gears before hitting 45. Thats great less rpm save on gas. But then you have to give it more throttle because the car is going so slow on take off since the rpms are so low since essentially your in the wrong gear for that speed. I thought more throttle means you are putting more fuel in the engine.
Then people are getting pissed at you because you are going from 0-60 in 2 minutes and holding them up.
If any one could help explain it to me that would be great. You literally have to learn how to coast for longer in order for any gas savings.

ECO mode will shift up faster and reduce the throttle mapping to a less aggressive profile. When checking how economical I can make it run, I keep the instantaneous fuel economy readout on screen. Doesn't matter what mode you're in, acceleration from a dead stop is going to suck fuel - worst case scenario other than idling in place.

But you don't have to hold up traffic either. The car actually does quite well in town in ECO when using 'moderate' (not hyper-miler) acceleration, combined with less aggressive braking, etc. I've been pleasantly surprised at the numbers.

I also enjoy twisting the dial to RED and experiencing what that twin turbo powerplant is capable of .... I usually turn off the mileage indicator at that point ...

I’ve played with all the modes, I see little to no difference except from sport. In the city it’s pretty low, on the Hwy it’s about 25 mpg in Sport, 26.5 in comfort and 27-28 in eco.

City, comfort and eco are equivalent. If I’m doing a lot of city, I just go to smart or comfort.

I spend most of the time in comfort and ~30% in sport. So I net ~ 21 mpg per tank, I’m pretty happy with that, considering when in sport it’s driven hard.

I know right, I’m just glad it’s not the default at startup. That’s one setting that I’m permanently ignoring.

Damn it, no more burning off at the lights,I'll have to be more conservative to save fuel...then again nah !

I’m coming from V8 world. I know a few of us are. You cannot possibly live in V8 world and care about fuel economy. I didn’t then and I still don’t now that I’m in a V6. I don’t want to sound like I’m being critical of OP or anyone who measures their fuel economy because I’m truly not. But I’m happy to pay whatever it costs to drive this car how I want because it’s worth it. And it’s still cheaper than my V8.

I would skip eco mode and use smart mode. You get the benefits of both eco and comfort, depending on how you want to drive.

The only reason why I even know the MPG numbers is because I’m amazed it’s so close to my Midnight Edition Colorado Z71 w/ the 2.8l duramax.

The plus side of the small gas tank is that it’s cheap to fill up

14 mpg is pretty horrible, in stop and go traffic I'll average 18-19. I'll get 14 mpg if I'm ripping around.

I've never set the drive mode to Eco. But, I do use Smart (lately for driving in icy, slick conditions). And my preferred drive mode for daily driving is Custom: where I set engine/trans to Eco and the rest to Sport.

There is nothing laid back about Eco when you stick your foot in it. If you want to accelerate fast just use the go-pedal. Oddly enough, the manual "warns" that in Eco the engine sound could be louder. Eh?

Eco mode is useful when driving on snow and ice, but other than that I'm usually using smart mode when looking for economy.

I remember the first time I tried to punch it while in ECO mode. DEFINITELY could tell I was in ECO mode. I only use ECO on long highway trips. I use SMART a good chunk of time.

The BEST setting I've found in custom mode is to make everything Sport (with enhanced sound) except steering. Steering set at comfort.

Don't worry about how much you push the peddle in eco cause the throttle response is turned down.
Hold 10% throttle in comfort and switch to sport and feel the surge of about double the actual throttle applied. Same with eco but more so.
Lame throttle input makes sure you arn't accidently over accelerating and smoothes your inputs, like a prius!

^^^Nailed it!!! Comfort is fairly linear until 30% throttle when the JB4 picks up.

I’m going to need wider tires, the car in sport, in the rain lit the tires up at 60 mph last night. Tires are still in good shape.... no LSD is the worst in 18’ GT1
