Dreaded Warped Rotors

I had my brakes changed by a local mechanic at 24K miles due to brake pulse. Why are you guys calling the pads cheap? They are $500 that's not cheap. I keep hearing that the pads are the problem so I didn't want them and the mechanic was like wow those are the most expensive brake pads he had ever seen.

Wouldn't you feel a constant vibration is the rotors are warped no matter what the speed is when breaking? I would think that if the vibration is only happening during hard breaks, then it would be something with the pad deposits.

No you would only feel it after a certain speed if they are warped only a little then on the highway. The more warped the lower the speed where you would initially feel it and the more severe it would feel at higher speeds.

mine were pretty annoying at even 25mph but at 60mph or higher it was downright terrifying

It’s pad deposits on the rotors. They’re not warped. How would the rotors ‘warp’? Too much heat? And if ‘turned’ that would remove material where ‘high’ leaving an un balanced rotor….

It's already been proven that it's pad deposits from some of the factory pads that are supplied to North America. Replacing the pads with either the European model or quality aftermarket units and rebedding them will resolve the issue 95% of the time.

Cheap in quality not in price. OEM replacement anything is usally way more expensive than aftermarket and not always better.

No other car I have heard of has brake pads that cost 536. My last car was an 06 g35 coupe. The brakes were better. The pads were around 100

better meaning it could stop faster. Of course tires and weight are factors

Who know's what KIA is thinking with their absurd MSRP on them. I'd never purchase the OEM pads, can buy 3 sets of better quality pads for cheaper haha.

aftermarket normally is better value than OEM from what I have seen too

Ohhhh man! So, I’m going to knock on wood and hope I’m not inviting an ongoing problem by even getting in this but…. I just purchased a 2021 gt2 that was a demo. Has 6k miles. (I’ll prob catch hell for buying a demo but oh well) Anyhow, when I went to test drive the gm came out and said you may notice something with the brakes. Its going to need new rotors, we will take care of it though no problem. I drove it, definitely felt the issue. When I returned I told him I liked it but wanted to come back and drive after the brakes were fixed. They fixed them the next day. I asked him what was done and he said “the rotors were replaced under warranty” I asked him if this was common issue. He of course said no. I then asked if they also changed the pads. He replied no. I thought that was kind of odd but figured there must be an issue , TSb, recall or something of the sort with the rotors. I didn’t read this post before I bought my car or we would have probably had a little different discussion before I signed. So, sorry to add to the confusion but the issue with mine was said to be the rotors. And according to them they didn’t and wouldn’t change the pads(prob because they are $500 ) . Brakes work great now though. I will go from having bad rotors to being a VERY squeaky wheel if this becomes an ongoing issue though. Fingers crossed that it was a fluke or maybe the gm letting his buddies get a little to wild after a night at the bar lol. And honestly Im not gonna bitch about having a problem, but they need to own it and fix it if I do. That is all. Lol

@Tokinwhiteboy you are just adding to the echo chamber. The bigger brakes thread has far more experiences on it than this wannabe brakes thread. FAQ: Vibration under braking: warped rotors? NO!

You'll find repeated denial that the issue is the pads. I know of at least one member of the forum who has had his ROTORS changed under warranty four times. Kia is nuts. Just fix the damned pads through replacement with aftermarket and most of the pad deposits would go away never to return: and the problem would be fixed on one set of rotors.

You might luck out. And there is no reason to borrow trouble and replace your pads if they work and they have plenty of wear left. If not, well then, you have plenty of options to try, and the problem of shuddering brakes will go away.

Our SUV would have issues braking on long descents in the heat, so we swapped the fronts for some slotted and drilled rotors and performance pads, with zero issues now. I'll probably do the same with the Stinger the first indication there's issues. ~8k miles now and so far so good. Sometimes it's easier to just buy the proper part and be done with it.

In all of these discussions, that has never come up before (that I have seen): all this time, I've assumed rotors are more expensive than pads.

3.3TT - Class Action Lawsuit: Pulsating Brakes

I am looking into starting a class action lawsuit against Kia to do a full recall on their brakes and rotors and have everything upgraded so we don't get pulsating brakes after a few thousand miles from warped rotors. So many people complaining about this, and my Kia rep on the VIP line agreed...

I think I've seen maybe two members complain of shuddering from their rear brakes.

Seems to be a easy remedy for this.. swap your front pads right away. It's so easy literally anyone could do it. Less than $150

Yeah except I had my brakes changed used different front pads and the shudder is coming back. Seems to me like it’s a design defect with the car. Maybe the reason you get deposits are the brakes are too small for the heavy car therefore the brakes over heat pads melt and leave deposits
