Discussion of Stinger paint quality (Was - Paint Chip Issue)

I haven’t voted in the poll yet, but have the hood edge chip and bumper/headlight issues on yellow. Noticed the hood chip the morning after I got the car and initially thought it was from wiper contact due to a black scuff that surrounded the chip. When I touched it up I realized the wiper wouldn’t contact it in that spot, so not sure what caused it. Haven’t noticed any bubbling or chipping elsewhere.

Same place both sides of mine are showing...just past the seam of the PPF and just under the headlight housing. I wonder if the massive heat swings we have here are causing "more than normal" expansion and thus extra "rubbing" in that area.

Only one side of mine has it. It doesn’t look like rubbing or it would be scratched. There are no scratches, plus I don’t see how it would be physically possible for the headlight to rub there. Not happy. First time I bought a first year car. Probably the last.

I would have that perspective too, if I were not middle aged. We don't wait for things anymore. Pull the trigger! Go NOW!, Etc.

Photo was passenger side closest to the grill. Black bumper I have in my office is same exact spot and rub mark.

They'll be fixing this soon. I have every confidence. Maybe even a recall to replace the headlight fixture with a retooled one that doesn't do that? I wouldn't be surprised.

I was just speaking with another member. All of us pointing these issues out only makes the Stinger better. KIA will obsess over this. Fitting yes.....The housing sits too tight to the bumper and or rattles/ vibrates against it. For all I know it happened during transport.

Bumper would be much cheaper to re-do however once you change you must re-certify and re-crash test.

They wont have these issues fixed by MY2019. This is turning into a disaster. Engineering a headlight to properly fit (and clear) a bumper cover is table stakes engineering. Not being able to properly design that dosent inspire alot of confidence in the rest of the vehicle long term.

I'm wondering if that rubbing can be prevented right after car purchase if you aware of it ... btw, I got a good offer and still going to get Stinger, Red one now after my Yellow was recalled from production. Thought through every other option — no alternatives there for the money, Stinger FTW!

Here are mine again for ref...i believe the same spot at Jason's above. The driver side could no way touch where it "flaked" so it probably started up higher under the light housing and then flaked the remainder of the way off. The passenger side is only slight delaminated at this point so i am waiting for it to flake away as well. You can also see the PPF seam it look close enough.

No Scratch Marks that i can see as @Never thought mentioned as well.

Hi everyone,longtime reader! Thanks for the insigt you have provided here. I'd like to share my experience getting my hood repainted. My paint shop it very good, amazing reviews and they have state of the art spray booth. They have done very expensive M cars and luxury cars in the past so I feel confident with them doing my Stinger.
I got an update from them and they are not stripping the hood to the metal.They said the paint on the car is some of the thinnest paint they have seen, still high-quality paint but really really thin. They also told me the hood was sanded down in the past.which is weird because it's a new vehicle! They figure something went wrong a the factory and the hood had to be repainted at factory. Interesting! So they said in their opinion, the car doesnt need new primer, just repaint. They took the base down 80percent and are repainting and then adding new cleracoat. I meantioned this forum and they said what they assessed is what they think is the correct thing to do right now,but guarantee their work in case of future problems. The shop said i shoudn't be seeing anymore faulty chips on the hood.
Interesting stuff! So thin paint-base could be the problem?

mine is almost the same color as the color of the underlying bumper so i couldn't even tell you if mine is flaking off. #lucky

We are going to need some aerodynamic duct tape like in NASCAR for these issues.

I want to thank you and KIA of Muncie for being so transparent, pro-active and involved in this thread. I’m sure I speak for most everyone on this thread, that you are more than appreciated. A dealer that’s willing to be open and honest about what’s happening is extremely valuable right now as we all try to figure out what’s happening and next steps. Thank you!
