Discussion of Stinger paint quality (Was - Paint Chip Issue)

Service manager at my dealer just called to say that I can bring in the Stinger for bumper re-painting. Again, I am pleasantly blown away by this pro-activity and willingness to address with only a very small amount of evidence on my car. Not sure if I got a "bad one" with respect to paint, but I'm going to wait at least 1k miles before I bring it in. I'm only at 360, so I haven't even completed the break-in period. I'd rather not have to go through multiple trips to the paint shop.

Clear Coat is chipping off. (I was granted repaint of the front bumper as part of my repaint back in July.) Time to start this process all over again.

Wait, how is clear coat chipping off if a shop repainted the car? Was it their first time painting a car?

You aren't familiar with the average work from a paint shop are you? Most repaints have some sort of defect from peeling edges, dust, fisheyes, solvent pop, runs, colour matching, uneven fading, uneven orange peel. The goal is to avoid having to do aftermarket paint work on your car at all costs. It will never be the same.

I guess I do proper research and only go to places that do high-end work on cars much more expensive than my Kia. Sure, I get a few eyerolls when I roll in with something that cost $40k but they do the job right the first time.

Has anyone, with the yellow Stinger gone through the repaint yet? I've read some other owners with different colors have... I think the micro blue with not great results. I'm curious if anyone has followed the process and been happy with the results? I'm in a holding pattern. I have my letter from Kia with the three options including how to do the swap and what they will give me on the buyback.

I wish I could have gone this way... My front bumper looks worse than before it was re-painted due to the shitty clearcoat job they did.

Being told by the dealership now that I have to deal with the paint-shop and their warranty process... Still contacting KMA in a few. Pretty sure my clear-bra guy is going to ghost me at this point and I'm going to loose my deposit on it....

Sorry to hear about that @MattRain. Part of the reason I want a replacement is so I don't have to deal with that. I'm interested to hear what KMA says, I knew the dealership would pull that crap (just deal with the shop).

I'm almost another month out from my last dealership visit, (nearly) 10 months into issues with my car, 7 months with my case, and I'm still in a "waiting" phase. That's after we were already in the "close your case twice" phase, then "admit there's a problem phase", then "lose your data" phase, and finally, "start all over" phase. They haven't done anything for me & my car. I'm nearing the point where some kind of legal action is going to be my last resort. Lemon law in my State only extends a year, which I'm approaching, and I've given Kia all the time they should have needed.

Some part of me wants to hope they'll still make this right. I'll be going on a small trip soon and I'll get to listen to the music of my rear panel separating and smacking against the glass, and some other noise from the moonroof. Kia would have done good to help me out a while ago, I've had tons of friends, family, neighbors and coworkers look at the car and tell me how beautiful it is, but to be turned off by the issues I've been having.

Continued Saga of the Repainted Micro Blue Stinger of mine...

I just took it to the paint shop, after the dealership telling me that I had to go through the paint shop's warranty, now that KIA has done their part in the repaint process and take it up with them. (Called my KMA Support person yesterday who has been working on the case and left a message yesterday as she was not in.)

Anyway, took it to the paint shop, and within 15 seconds of him looking at the car, was told that all of them were rock chips... Yes... some of them are rock-chips, because the clear coat is so bad that a fricken leaf would dent the clear coat, but look at the picture I posted a few posts back. Now tell me that's a rock-chip. After 10 minutes of a heated discussion of him lieing to my face, I left and drove straight to the dealership. From there, the Service Manager took quite a few pics and told me that I would be hearing back from them in a bit. (I am NOT putting shame on the dealership, they have been great through this whole process, I am POd at the paintshop and paint quality of work that they did. Yes the dealership chose them, but I have had nothing but great service through my dealership)

After leaving the dealership, I called my KMA support person to make sure this issue has been added to the list. At this point, I requested that KMA looks into completely replacing the front bumper with an OEM Painted, Baked on clear coat bumper.

For those saying, well why didn't you clear-bra it right after the re-paint... Every shop I've talked to, would not put a clear-bra on the car unless it had been 1.5-2 months since the repaint, since the clear coat had not been a factory baked on coat. Hence the reason for not having one on yet. The bra is sitting in my garage...

What a screwed up mess! Damned if you do damned if you don't. I guess you could have left your Stinger parked while the clear coat cured! Heh!! I hope that you get your brand new bumper. It's justice.

A clear bra is not an appropriate solution for a poor paint job. Thats beyond absurd. I know I have been annoying people since the beginning of this thread but I will reiterate, pressure KIA into BUYING BACK your car if you are suffering from these widespread paint issues. Do not take no for an answer. You do not want to be bringing in another party (in addition to your dealership and KIA) like some shitty body shop to deal with this. I am really sorry to see this and I hope it works out for Matt, but I called it. You do not want your new car to go through extensive repainting because issues like this are almost guaranteed.

That's fine advice for someone who doesn't particularly care that they have this car. But for those who really want to keep it for all the other reasons that make it an excellent choice and experience, buyback is not an option. Paint, lamentable as this is, is not a big enough flaw to drop the car. Repainting is the only option for someone who wants THIS car. Getting Kia to honor their paint warranty while it is still in force is the smart move. No sense dumping Kia's reaching out; drawn out and frustrating though it may be for some. Meanwhile, touch up and prettify your Stinger the best you can till a final resolution via the warranty is obtained.

A quality paint job does not need a clear bra.

Yes it does-no paint job is bulletproof to various sized stones coming at your car at highway speeds.

Good paint will not chip easily. Poor paint will look like hell in short order without PPF. Of course, good paint will benefit from PPF. No reason not to armor up as much as possible for the long, long road.
