setting up my repaint for my G2 Yellow, I had a choice (as of Linda) here in OKC with our KIA dealerships. I choose the one that has their own body and paint shop. This dealership sells and works on the better cars of the city, including but not limited to Audi, Infiniti, Cadillac, Porsche, Land Rover, an KIA. They are currently repainting the yellow one that they sold in OKC and will get mine in a week or so. So far KIA America has been on the up and up with me.

I think my blue stinger is suffering from this paint chip problem. Some of the chips look like it *could* be caused by rocks getting kicked up except for this one spot under the drivers side headlight that couldn't be the case, it's almost like the paint is peeling away.
People who have this paint problem happen to them does this look anything like yours?

How long have you had your Stinger? What is the build date? If this is all that is going wrong with your paint over an extended period of time I'd say you're good. PPF while your car still looks good in front. Watch the rest for signs of non impact flaws.

(edit: the headlight assembly problem: yours looks very small, especially if it has been going on for quite a while. I wouldn't expect it to get any bigger. In the pic that looks more like a chip/flake rather than a peel away. The rubbing headlight assembly issue produces a range of effects, from nothing visible at all, through actual peeling away, i.e. complete paint failure.)

Aside from the headlight peeling defect this doesnt look like the typical faulty blue chipping paint. The one that goes to black plastic is likely a rock, i have one of those. The last pic looks like a partial chip (clearcoat only or half way through the paint) unless you touched it up already. The faulty paint blue chipping almost always will chip to what looks like bare metal with no signs of impact. I have lots of these. Unless you touched up the chip ill guess you have a 2018 bulid date.

Just checked inside the door jam and it says 1/18. I picked up the car at the end of March and its at about 4500 miles now. I haven't used touch up paint on any marks/chips on the car. Just surprised at all these marks with such few miles in 5 months of driving in New England spring and summer months.

I went though most of this thread's pages and they look similar to other pictures in this tread, maybe just a bit smaller. I took some closer pictures as I don't think my original pictures do justice to what it looks like. Also it is a micro blue GT, I think most of the other blue stingers in this thread were 2.0's?

Picture 1 is the headlight area does look more like chipping than peeling which could be caused by the headlight rubbing

Picture 2 doesn't look like it goes down to metal? Or am i mistaken?

Picture 3 does look like it could just be the top clear coat. Since I have this picture I could monitor it if it get any worse.

Those pictures are better. 2 and 3 look like the typical blue chipping. Time to open a paint case.

Agree. It won't hurt to start now, start slow. :cautious: Kia will always, always, always, be more than happy to back off a case if given "permission". But they won't run from one.

What I am saying is that, if this is as bad as your car is @Deaddudehangin, after more than half a year of life, it might not get any worse: and it might just start showing more signs, but don't borrow trouble. If you feel that your paint looks good enough to protect and will likely stay that way, then just ask for warranty work. Get your dealer to check out your paint flaws, and this thread, then make a decision: if they decide it isn't road damage, you're "in". Get the few spots repaired and then PPF/ceramic the heck out of it.

I don't care which car we are talking about, Kia Stinger or Bimmer this or Audi that. If the car is your baby then protect her. Of course, some Stinger owner's don't see the car as anything unique or worthy of special attention. Fine. They'll all be gone on the next new thing sooner or later. And this discussion isn't for them at all. But somebody like me is literally in a unique relationship with this car: it's the only brand new car I have ever owned. I chose it after it "chose" me first. It was all the winter months "wooing" me.

My paint is good. It it weren't, I'd be throwing a hissy fit to get the best deal out of Kia I could, and regardless of outcome, I'd be getting my car a brand new coat of paint, toss in the bucks to get my total competition orange scheme (down to the door hinges and spare tire well), and never look back.

I went to my closest dealer this evening and looked around about 20 on their lot - black, red, and two white. Plus one pantera (?) that I have to say is stunning.

I'd never really looked closely at a white, but oh my, I think I may be changing my mind about the whole wrap or dip thing. That metal flake is absolutely gorgeous, and the contrast with the black chrome looks sooooo good! .. but I digress..

Only one (red) had a noticeable paint problem, but it was a doozy - passenger-side between front bumper and quarter panel, had almost 2" of paint missing from rubbing. After seeing that, I looked carefully at how the panels meet in various places and I hate to say it, but if you're not getting the kind of peeling that we've seen in the corner of the headlight, you're going to, and not just there. It was almost like someone had taken a box cutter and carved the paint away - but there was no damage to the underlying plastic (?) below.

It's funny you mention the orange, that borla sema car is what really sold me on a stinger just look to dam good.

But I was looking some more with a light and found this under one of the vents, would never of found it if I wasn't looking with a light. Ya idk what this will do after a few year/a salt filled winter so I rather get it taken care of asap. Funny part is I bought the extended warranty and I could of sworn they said they were putting a protective coat over the car, which was why I had to wait an extra couple of days to get the car.

Either way I'm going to call the kia customer service number tomorrow. Unless someone knows of a better number to call?

Kia will just tell you to take your car to a dealer for examination, which will probably include pics taken by them, etc. But, it's a start.

Unfortunately, you can't tell the exact build date from the VIN. Digits 12-17 are the serial number or production number of the car. This is the 12,103 Stinger that rolled off the assembly line. That's assuming Kia uses that number the same way other manufacturers do. There's no set standard. As of the close of July Kia has sold 11,830 Stingers. So... this being the 12,103 Stinger built is not unlikely and my guess is it was built in 2018, not 2017. 2017's would have lower terminating digits.

This is why I went straight to my PPF guy after getting the car from the dealer. He notice 2 chips on the car, but nothing bad. He will wrap the PPF around the edges so hopefully it will turn out great once it's protected and ceramic coated.

Did some more checking... this can't be right. Just checked my car and the serial number is 21,000+. Unless the car referenced above has been sitting on the lot a long time. My car was built in 12/2017.

My build date is 02/18, and my VIN last six are, 028702. There is no way those numbers indicate the number of the stinger produced.

With peeling between rear bumper plastic and rear quarter and peeling on hood vent on top off the very common peeling under the head light this isn't a rubbing issue and they haven't resolved their paint issues. All Stingers will need a full re-paint.

Bob, you're shell shocked. Perspective says that a very small percentage of Stingers have any paint issues at all. The ones that do will probably need a repaint sooner or later. But they don't all fail at the same rate or extent. Yours is horribly afflicted. It is the worst case I know of, by far. Others are so slight that touch up paint makes them look good. And everything in between.

I have no peeling at all at least. But i am shell shocked at the number of current cars on the lot peeling for no logical reason except the paint is still bad. They moved from brittle chipping paint to peeling paint. If you think your paint will last 5 years you have your head in the sand.

Only time will tell. I do like not borrowing trouble. But in reserve, I have the warranty for the first three of those years. And I plan on a full repaint anyway at some point, but probably not before five years. Heck, the car might outlive me! :P

Such a shame since this is such an awesome car. I'm in a good position as I leased the car and plan to have the repaint done next month. If it looks good now and I keep it, I have three years to see how the paint holds up. If it's bad I turn in the keys and start over. If it's still in great shape then I'll probably buy out the lease.
